NoDQ.com > UFC > Liddell Wants Shot At Title With Win Over Evans
Posted by Bobby Spade on 08/26/2008 at 02:46 PM

Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell tells MMAWeekly.com that with a win over Rashad Evans on September 6th, he feels that his next fight should be against Light Heavyweight Champion Forrest Griffin...

"I think it should," he told MMAWeekly.com. "I think I should have a shot at him. I don't see why I wouldn't. Who else sells as much? But I'll fight whoever.

"I think it seems to make sense for (the UFC). But that's not something I concern myself with right now. I've got to get past Rashad before any of that makes any sense."

Liddell last fought in December of 2007, defeating Wanderlei Silva in what was one of the most anticipated fights of all time. The bout was a fight of the year candidate that has led to much clamouring for a rematch between the two light heavyweight legends.

A Forrest Griffin vs. Chuck Liddell title matchup could be very, very big for the UFC. Remember, Liddell was Griffin's coach on The Ultimate Fight Season 1. Griffin went on to win the fight with Bonnar, thus earning himself the season one contract, a contract that has led to Griffin becoming one of the sports most popular fighters and title holder in the most stacked light heavyweight division in the world.

Liddell lost the title last year to Quinton Jackson following a two year stint as the light heavyweight king. Following the Jackson loss, Liddell would lose again to Keith Jardine in September 2007 before going on to defeat Silva in the December classic.

If this fight is sold properly by the UFC, it has the makings to be biggest UFC PPV buyrate of all time. Liddell is big ratings draw for the UFC anyway, but a match up with Griffin and the story behind the fight will draw people in.

Of course, Liddell has Rashad Evans on his path in just two weeks when they meet in Atlanta, GA. Evans is also a TUF winner and is undefeated in his career.
