Combat Zone Wrestling returned to the ECW Arena last night for the promotion's eighth anniversary show. This was a roller coaster night that wound up winning back some fans through a rather incredible set of circumstances.

A sizable section of the fans were already in a cranky mood, after a recent shoot interview on which Kenny Kingston made the statement that CZW was going to limit fly-ins in the future, which would obviously eliminate some favored talent from regular appearances.

So from that place, the opening (dark?) match saw Metro Sickness defeated the Wild Stallions. Let's just say they tried really hard but the crowd was not especially appreciative.

  • Grim Reefer defeated Javi Air. Reefer as usual, is over at the Arena.

  • The Great Blazini defeated Ryan McBride after a Shooting Star Press.

  • Derek Frazier and Niles Young defeated CHIKARA's Jigsaw and Hallowicked after a ballshot by Noel Harlow.

  • Toby Klein pinned Maven Bentley in a handicapped match in a match to "win back Necrobutcher's job". Bentley's mystery partner was Mitch Ryder from IWA-Mid-South was Bentley's partner. Bentley got rolled up by Klein for the pinfall.

  • BLK OUT remained CZW Tag Team Champions after defeating the New Jersey All Stars and Team AnDrew when Sabian pinned Lucky of the NJ All-Stars after a top rope senton splash. Team AnDrew came off well again, and are clearly being built up for a top spot down the line.

Intermission came with the usual long wait...then two um, chemically enhanced beaut...er, strippers from Crazy Horse Too shilled the After Party which CZW pushed heavily...to the point of starting the show 30 minutes early to get people to attend. Bentley chased the strippers to the back to the crowd's hoots, which was then followed by brothers Hardcore Nick Gage and Justice Pain beating on each other to set up the main event. Pain made statements that would come back to haunt him later...promising everything short of napalm at 20 paces for the match.

They beat on each other some more...with a pull-apart ended by a classic and out of nowhere crack by Pain to Gage: "Just because of that shit, you're not invited to Sunday Dinner!".

  • DJ Hyde defeated Chris Hero and Adam Flash to win the vacated Iron Man Title. The original Chris Hero-Adam Flash match became a three way match, in a storyline turn that had the crowd groaning bigtime. Maven Bentley, saying he'd been beaten by a fast count, decided he'd try again for "success". He proceeded to add DJ Hyde to the match, who then became the Iron Man champion, after Hyde pinned Hero due to distraction by Eddie Kingston. Post match, Kenny Kingston accepted Hero's challenge to a Loser Leaves CZW match. The crowd crapped all over Hyde going over bigtime.

  • In what was easily the top match of the night, Drake Younger retained the Ultraviolent Underground Title in a three way elimination match against Vortekz and everyone's favorite victim of trauma by large blunt objects and puncture by sharp and painful ones... Danny Havoc. Vortekz eliminated Havoc after he sent Havoc off the top rope and to the floor through a pane of glass. The crowd hooted that one. Younger then pinned Vortekz following a scary looking Copkiller through a pane of autoglass.

    Then, the fun started.

  • Justice Pain retained the CZW World Heavyweight Championship in a ten minute match after pinning Nick Gage following a Pain Thriller. This match went home out of nowhere after Gage suffered an shoulder injury/stinger, where he didn't move his shoulder (or anything else) for quite a while, laying on the mat.

Injury or not, after the promises for a match that had everything short of napalm, the crowd full out revolted, with the more vocal section near the camera chanting for refunds and chanting for wrestlers who haven't appeared in CZW recently, including Mike Quakenbush, Super Dragon, and Kevin Steen.

If the show had ended like this, the March show could have been held in Zandig's backyard.

In a good job of booking on the fly, Justice Pain came back out and issued an open challenge. The crowd's screamed for Drake Younger who then accepted.

  • Justice Pain retained the CZW World Championship by pinning Drake Younger after a Pain Thriller onto thumbtacks after Pain gave Younger an Awesome Bomb through a barbed wire table on the floor.

This match saved the show and might well have saved the promotion. It let the fans go home from an Anniversary show happy, built a new star, and set a main event match for April (Younger's out of the country in March) as Pain will wrestle Younger for the title in April.
