Jay's Ways - WWE Summerslam 2018 Preview Submitted by Justin Watry on 08/18/2018 at 01:44 PM
WWE Summerslam 2018
Kickoff Show Match: Rusev and Lana vs. Zelina Vega and Andrade “Cien” Almas
Another month, another rumor of Rusev/Lana leaving the company. What a way to begin my WWE Summerslam preview, huh? True or not, Andrade Almas and Zelina Vega are the new hot act. They deserve the victory more.
WINNER: Vega & Almas
Kickoff Show Raw Tag Team Championship Match: The Revival vs. Champions The B Team
This is the problem. If The Revival win (which they should), then the past two months of The B-Team has been a waste. If The B-Team win, then I don't know what to tell you other than shrugging and moving on. We need new RAW Tag Team Champions. I doubt it happens at Summerslam though...
Kickoff Show WWE Cruiserweight Championship Match: Drew Gulak vs. Champion Cedric Alexander
I have watched a grand total of zero episodes of 205 Live the last couple of months. I have no idea if Drew Gulak is still discussing Powerpoint presentations or what Cedric Alexander is up to. What I do know is that this match is on the Kickoff Show and probably for good reason. IF I do end up watching, I am likely to enjoy the bout. In ring is not the issue.
Money in the Bank Contract On the Line: Braun Strowman vs. Kevin Owens
Despite all the speculation and fantasy booking, I do not feel this matchup will mean anything long-term. Braun had to beat somebody up at the pay-per-view, and Kevin Owens is the best heel available. No switch in contracts. No Money in the Bank swap. Nothing. Just a filler story line to get both men on the card in an entertaining way. Do we get the actual cash in later on Sunday? I know it is the popular belief...I will say no though. Keep the mystery going for awhile.
Finn Balor and Baron Corbin
I have officially thrown in the towel on predicting "The Demon" Finn Balor appearing. Too bad too because that persona should be busted out on rare occasions. WrestleMania 34 would have worked. Summerslam would also work. Either way, I think Balor gets the nod here. Corbin has the perfect role currently. Balor needs to be doing more though. With Brock Lesnar (maybe) out the door soon, a spot at the top of Raw is opening up.
WINNER: Finn Balor
Daniel Bryan vs. The Miz
Awesome, awesome, awesome video packages Tuesday night on Smackdown LIVE. If you have not seen the promos yet, go watch them now. I can not praise them enough. We all knew this story line would be good, but wow! Hats of to WWE, Daniel Bryan, and The Miz for their work in hyping Summerslam. No doubt will be a hot atmosphere in Brooklyn on Sunday. The winner comes down to Daniel Bryan's contract. If he is leaving, he needs to lose. If he is staying, he needs to win. The rivalry is paid off with the face beating the heel. No other outcome is correct...unless The Yes Man is finished with WWE.
WINNER: Daniel Bryan
WWE Intercontinental Championship Match: Champion Dolph Ziggler vs. Seth Rollins
Logic says Dean Ambrose will help Seth Rollins regain the IC Title. Knock out Drew McIntyre at ringside and let the fans go wild from there. Simple, easy, and effective. Wonderful. I just wrote down Seth Rollins as my winner...but changed it to Dolph Ziggler. Why? Not a clue. Just a spur of the moment flip flop. Ambrose is not going to turn heel, so take that away. That can happen another time. I just think SOMETHING will happen to cause this mini-Shield reunion to fall apart. Jason Jordan?
WINNER: Dolph Ziggler
WWE United States Championship Match: Champion Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Jeff Hardy
Two gifted performers. Two guys who could walk out with the United States Title. Champions usually retain, so that is the safe bet.
WINNER: Shinsuke Nakamura
Smackdown Tag Team Championship Match: Champions The Bludgeon Brothers vs. The New Day
If the tag division over on RAW is bad, then I don't know what the word is to describe the blue brand. Sanity has done nothing. The Usos are locked up or something. The Bar must be out drinking, and The New Day are still the old day. That leaves us with Luke Harper and Erick Rowan. Reliable but not too exciting.
Smackdown Women’s Championship Match: Champion Carmella vs. Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte Flair
I was going to pick Becky Lynch over Carmella. Then Charlotte was added to the mix. I understand the move but not the timing. If we are getting a Charlotte/Becky feud for the Fall, then we could have easily got a start the week after Summerslam. Charlotte is a big star and deserves to be on the card obviously, but Randy Orton isn't. Asuka isn't. She can just as easily be on the Kickoff panel and announce her return that Tuesday or something. A triple threat battle will be fine. Just not as good as Becky getting her moment alone. Carmella squeaks by again. *sigh*
Raw Women’s Championship Match: Ronda Rousey vs. Champion Alexa Bliss
I wrote two months ago that Ronda Rousey vs. Alexa Bliss for the Raw Womens Championship should headline Summerslam. Best heel in the division and the best face in the division going at it for the top title in the division. Makes sense to me from that angle. Rousey should be victorious and win in short order. That is what we wanted to see at WM with Stephanie McMahon earlier in 2018, and the same applies here. Bliss has been great, but her time is up. No Natalya heel turn. No funny business. Just a new champ crowned on the Road to Evolution.
WINNER: Ronda Rousey
WWE Championship Match: Champion AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe
Despite me coming off as somewhat negative, I really like this Summerslam card. Lots of intriguing matchups and tons of potential for some really cool feel good moments. AJ Styles and Samoa Joe appears to be a lengthy feud, so this initial meeting may not result in much. The two are still talking on Smackdown LIVE each week without much fighting or drama. The family aspect can be exploited more in the coming months. For that, I suspect Joe destroys AJ but loses to a quick roll up. Kinda cheap but better than a DQ/count out finish. Styles retains and keeps his spot as the face that runs the place.. For a little bit longer.
WINNER: AJ Styles
WWE Universal Championship Match: Champion Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns
Here we go! Let's go! Big time baby! This is what we have all been waiting for. The REAL main event of Summerslam. The Universal Championship is up for grabs as the two top dogs in the industry duke it out. Even though Lesnar has retained every time fans have 'guaranteed' and 'knew' he would lose, I do think he finally drops the strap on Sunday. No more swerves or last second deals. Let the man commit to UFC and come back for non-title story lines when he is free. Reigns is the present and future of the business. Nobody can deny that, so do what is right. Annnnddddd neeeeewwwww...
