Wrestle Review: Lashing Back Submitted by Andy Sullivan on 05/04/2018 at 10:19 PM
The cycle of the WWE roster burning the candle at both ends begins Sunday. The Greatest Royal Rumble was just a little over a week ago and now we have Backlash Sunday. I'm glad I don't work for WWE as a talent because they've got to be exhausted. Of course, they're a lot better conditioned than me as well. :)
Bayley's slide continues on the kick-off show as she will surely lose to Paige-lite aka Ruby Riott. The extra T is for extra emphasis, right?
Jeff Hardy defending the U.S. title against Randy Orton should be one of the best matches of the night. I'm really looking forward to this one. They actually faced each other on the March 19, 2007 episode of Monday Night Raw. They faced again in 2008. These have no bearings on this match. I just figured I'd throw that out there. I'd love a Jeff Hardy win here and, you know, since they're pushing Jeff as a singles competitor again, I say he gets the win on Orton.
Nia Jax/Alexa Bliss for the Raw women's title WrestleMania rematch is one that I think goes to....Nia. I think it'll take a couple of rematches until Alexa regains the title, probably with the help of Mickie James. Nia retains, possibly by disqualification.
Seth Rollins defending the IC strap against Miz just days after successfully defending against Fin Balor in a fine match Monday should be good. Anytime these guys get together, it's good. I'm not so sure Fin doesn't get involved in this in some way. In fact, I'm thinking we see quite a few run-ins Sunday. Fin will make sure Seth retains, shake his hand and give him the 1916.
KO and Sami will be fed to the wolves known as Braun Stroman and Bobby Lashley. These guys have to be a tag team for good. Imagine these guys running wild through the Raw tag team division. Wish we had Stroman and Lashley at WrestleMania. Oh well, we get it now. Let's be happy.
Daniel Bryan vs Big Cass-I honestly love that I'm including Daniel Bryan in a ppv column again. I say Bryan puts up a heroic effort but they give the win to Big Ass, I mean Cass. Sidebar, is he not the most uninspiring wrestler? I honestly don't care enough to boo this guy.
Charlotte better regain the title against Carmella. She won't, though. See, I'm still sticking with the idea that Carmella, Billie Kay and Peyton Royce will be a trio. Well, they should be. I'd have Kay and Royce help Carmela retain Sunday. In fact, I say it happens.
Samoa Joe will defeat Roman Reigns. They need to do a downward spiral storyline with Roman. He lost to Brock at GRR, say he loses to Joe Sunday and then he goes a little loco. Maybe he snaps and(gasp) turns heel. Just what I'd like to see. Not to say it happens. In fact, knowing how WWE does things, Reigns will never be a heel.
AJ Styles vs Shinsuke Nakamura in the main event should be good. Add in that it's now a No DQ match and....if Shin doesn't win the title here, what are you doing with him? There's only so many times one guy can lose to another before he stops being taken seriously. I fear that is where Shinsuke is headed. If he loses Sunday, he'll likely go no higher than U.S. Championship, if that.
I'm actually anticipating a sneaky good show Sunday night. I hope that holds true.
Impact Wrestling has been pretty entertaining television the last few weeks. I'm quite enthralled with the Eddie Edwards situation. This could end in Edwards turning heel and facing Tommy Dreamer but not just yet. Also intriguing to me is the Rosemary/Sue Young angle. The druids coming out, Sue beating up Rosemary, making Allie watch...very Ministry of Darkness of them. I dig the stuff Impact has been doing. Not to mention Eli Drake...I dig that dude.
Wrestling is good now, really good. And not just WWE. Don't limit yourself.
I'll end on a bit of a serious note. All my life, I never in my wildest nightmares thought I'd be present for a shooting. That occurred Thursday afternoon I was with my family at Opry Mills in Nashville for my mom's birthday. We were getting ready to leave when we heard shots. Thee cop on tv said 1-2 but I swear to God I heard 4-5. The whole family did. Once we got in the car and headed back to where we met(my sister's)it took a long time to unwind. Actually, once I got home I stayed up until after midnight. We're all fine but I'm going to be a little jumpy for awhile when I hear a gun go off.
I know that last paragraph had nothing to do with wrestling but I had to get it off my chest. Enjoy Backlash and thanks for reading.
