Jericho Vs Omega

Before you read the article, please check out my video ViRTUE’s RAGE on the recent happenings between Chris Jericho and Kenny Omega!

Here are a couple of excerpts from a past column I wrote in 2016 about wrestling “characters”. I will admit, within the past week, Kenny Omega has shot up my charts and is now in my top 5 best wrestling characters since CM Punk’s “4th wall breaking” gimmick. Coming out dressed in drag as Princess Jasmine from Aladdin might have something to do with that. That is definitely ballsy! I actually said he was my favorite wrestling character in said article from 2016, but when I Tweeted my current top 5 list earlier in the week, I seemingly omitted him. Shame on me for “forgetting”, and yes, I blame Dave Meltzer for making me think of Omega as more of a wrestler than a character this past year because of his stupid match star rating system. I dislike Meltzer so much, I must have let him influence my organic feelings and thoughts on what Omega offers the business.

From the Vault-

Jericho: Timeless? Ageless? Perhaps Y2J is both of those. Regardless however, he just knows how to evolve his character and adapt to the ever changing time periods. So what character is Jericho currently giving us? Well, he is giving us probably one of the best characters of his career, a heel IWC Troll-bashing, new talent burying villain. For the last several years, Jericho comes and goes on short period contracts, and he typically feuds against newer and younger talent, and ultimately puts them over by losing to them. However, this time around he is getting a lot of wins against the newer and younger talent and it is driving the IWC nuts. The beauty of it all is that Jericho is running with this gimmick that the IWC basically created. This is a perfect blend of old school adapting to modern times. Brilliant! Character Score 5/5 Stars

Omega: Do you know who Kenny Omega is? If not, go Google and YouTube him now! He is the one who took over the Bullet Club in New Japan when AJ Styles left for WWE. He often goes by his nickname, the Cleaner. Today, Omega and the Young Bucks are called the Elite. These guys all should get at least an NXT shot one day, but I think that is more up to them because reportedly WWE has already tried landing their services. Omega is self-trained and once wrestled a nine-year old girl in DDT in Japan. Sounds creepy right? Not really, it was performance art at its finest. Omega is an avid video game fan and incorporates popular video game content into his promos, entrances, and matches. He can play baby face well, but is more known for his heel work. You do not get more “CHARACTER” than Kenny Omega. Character Score 5/5 Stars- Out of all the 5/5 Star rankings of mine, The Cleaner is definitely my favorite pro wrestling character today!

New Thoughts-

Do I think Jericho Vs Omega will be an all-time great match? Well, considering Jericho is now 46 years old, and he and Omega do not have a history of working together for fluidity purposes, it probably will not be anywhere close. However, the hype is real, and that is what really matters most. The angle and the challenge was an instant buzz getter. This thing will be hyped up and talked about for the next two months. In following Jericho’s career since 1996, I have no doubt that he will still deliver to the best of his 46 year old ability. The type of talent and athleticism that Omega has will also mask any of the potential concerns that Jericho’s style will not mesh well with Omega’s during the match. I have a strong feeling that Meltzer will not give this one 5 or 5+ stars, but I really do not give a shit about his assessment of the match. Jericho will find a way to shine, regardless.

So now that I have established that the hype and buzz leading into Wrestle Kingdom 12 is what is going to make or break this match, what exactly will the fallout be after the fact? It clearly opens the door both ways for wrestlers no longer contracted with WWE to make headlines overseas and on social media, and for WWE to maybe take notice more frequently of what their core fan base of “smartened” fans really want to see on the big stage. Examples as stated in the video above: Omega and the Young Bucks to WWE/NXT, Daniel Bryan and/or CM Punk to NJPW or Ring of Honor. To be blunt, all of those possibilities are a wet dream for a high percentage of today’s niche wrestling fan base. And guess what? Chris Jericho and Kenny Omega both know that, and this is exactly why this Dream Match is happening. It will not only be the Alpha Vs the Omega, but it will also be Sports Entertainment Vs Professional Wrestling.

I highly doubt that after January 4, 2018, Chris Jericho will be back in WWE anytime soon; however, never say never because for all we know, Y2J could sneak back and be a surprise entrant in the Royal Rumble later in the month. As for what will happen with Omega’s career after the fact: I think he stays with NJPW longer, at least until he loses the IWGP United States Championship and perhaps has at least one run as the IWGP Heavyweight Champion in 2018. Looking back to WK10 and WK11, Omega lost the IWGP Intercontinental Championship to Kushida in 2016, and then lost against Okada for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship in 2017. Therefore, it is a relatively easy prediction that Omega will successfully defend the IWGP United States Championship against Jericho at WK12. I predict the match will easily go close to 30 minutes, and although it may not be the best match of their respective careers, it still should go down as one of the most memorable. Remember folks, Jericho will find a way to invent something new coming out of this feud with Omega. If Omega becomes a bigger star and perhaps gets more over with fans in the United States after all is said and done, then once again Chris Jericho will have done his job, and done it well. This match could be the ultimate torch passing…

I have heard recent rumblings that the Clueless Wrestling Columnist is working on a new episode and plans to return this month, talking about how star match ratings are overrated. I am sure that it will be something worthwhile and potentially controversial. Stay tuned…
