Wrestle Review: What Does It Mean? Submitted by Andy Sullivan on 11/03/2017 at 09:20 PM
It was announced exclusively on twitter that AJ Styles would receive a WWE Championship match against Jinder Mahal this coming Smackdown Live. I cannot wait! AJ is clearly the #1 fan favorite in WWE. I love that AJ is getting this shot. I do have a few questions, though.
What happens with the AJ/Rusev match that was supposed to take place to decided a SD Live team member for Survivor Series? I presume that match gets pushed to next week. That is unless WWE actually surprises us and gives AJ the championship. I highly doubt that, but you never know. He should win the championship but he won't. Smackdown Live used to be full of surprises. If Styles weren't champion when SD Live began, he would've gotten a shot and won it. Now? I don't think they have the stones....
Did Emma being released this past week have anything at all to do with her outperforming their prized Asuka not once but two nights in a row? Yes she lost but Emma gave her a run for her money. My thoughts on the Darren Young release? They weren't using him. It's better to let a talent go so they can find a place where their talents can be appreciated. I wonder if WWE isn't clearing cap space for the one-off from Rhonda Rousey at WrestleMania? My gut says yes. Will those fired get rehired later next year? It's possible and I hope so.
This Monday on Raw, we potentially get Braun Stroman vs. Kane. I say potentially because they could be boneheads and make it a dark match. I've been wanting this one. I honestly wondered if they'd wait or just do it now. It'd be stupid for that to be a dark match and Jason Jordan vs Elias' guitar on a pole match be on the live portion. It was announced that Braun will be on Team Raw at Survivor Series. As of yet, those are the only two Raw team members. However, I have an idea. Call it a spoiler but I think Raw's team will be Angle, Stroman, Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins. Team SD is almost complete: Shane, Orton, Shin and Roode are the 4 of 5. The 5th was supposed to be decided in the aforementioned AJ/Rusev match. Will that be postponed for the following week? Survivor Series needs some Styles. So I say the Singh Brothers cause him to lose the title match and he beats Rusev to get in the 5 on 5.
If that indeed takes place, Team Smackdown Live will be set. And what a team it is! However, I see a scenario where Stroman eliminates all of Team Smackdown and saves Angle's job. Oh, did I mention Stephanie returned and said if Team Raw didn't win, Kurt would be fired? Whichever team wins, does the entire team get rewarded the very next week?
Last night I watched Impact Wrestling for this week. You're asking why, aren't you? I'm a wrestling addict, that's why. Bound For Glory is Sunday and their main event is actually pretty intriguing. I really like how they elevated Eli Drake as their champion. I've always been a Johnny Nitro/Mundo/Impact fan.
A few more intriguing matches are the monsters ball match between Abyss and Grado, as well as Gail Kim's final match being for the knockouts championship between her, Sienna and Allie. Gail wins, retires as champion and there's a tournament to determine the new champ. Abyss will likely destroy Grado but here's what I'd like to see: I'd like to see Grado go berserk and just annihilate Abyss. Imagine the shocked look on his face and the shock in the announcer's voices if Grado won!
I listened to Jim Ross' podcast this week with Mick Foley and Jeremy Borash as guests. Jim's is a very interssting podcast in general but certainly this installment. If you haven't, I implore you to give it a listen. Good stuff!
I also got J.R's book, Slobberknocker: My life in wrestling(which he said in his podcast he should've left off the "in wrestling" part). I'm looking forward to reading it. I'm currently reading Ric and Charlotte Flair's book. Side note, I'm really looking forward to Ric's ESPN 30 for 30 Tuesday November 7 at 10/9. I'm eagerly anticipating this one. It should be very colorful and very interesting!
It's a really interesting time in wrestling right now, no matter the promotion. My parting shot for the week: the Chris Jericho/Kenny Omega twitter war is probably just that: a war of words. Or is it? A Chris Jericho vs Kenny Omega match would be unbelievable. They could tell a great story in the ring. I hope we see it someday. That's all I got this week. Enjoy the week in wrestling!
