ViRTUE's RAGE: A Letter to Fan Chants Submitted by Virtue on 09/04/2017 at 01:10 PM
September 4, 2017
After over a year, it is finally that time again. Vengeance is back with a brand new open letter, and this time it is to “Fan Chants”. As for my next article, I am working on a super column regarding the following two topics: “Dissecting Roman Reigns Vs John Cena” and “What is Next for Asuka?” I should have it posted sometime this week. In the meantime, you can catch me on the NoDQ Panel Videos. There are now nine panel episodes currently on the channel, and yes, binge watching/listening is accepted. But as for right now, I hope you enjoy this heartfelt letter to none other than “Fan Chants”. You can follow and interact with Vengeance on Twitter (@EGW_Vengeance).
Dear Fan Chants,
Will you please just stop? Seriously! I’d rather watch reruns of WCW Thunder than to have to listen to one more insipid fan chant interspersed with fast hand-clapping! “You Still Got It!” “Super Dragon!” “You F**ked Up!” I can’t deal with it anymore! And what’s really funny is that you exist because the fans think by chanting, they get to be a part of things; by chanting they can “hijack” a show. But all you’re doing is detracting from the show. Your loud, often irrelevant chants do nothing to enhance the show.
Your job as fans is not to “hijack” the show. That’s not how it works. Now, I know that often it’s a way to express your disappointment with the product, at least in the WWE. I get that. The WWE product is so damn stale and predictable that I haven’t watched a complete WWE show in over a year, so I get your frustration. But you think chanting your distaste for what’s going on in the ring is helping? Nothing could be further from the truth. You think a “Cena Sucks” chant is going to wake everyone up to how much the fans dislike him? I got news for you. First, money speaks louder than any chant ever could. Cena makes WWE money, so a few thousand fans in an arena chanting that he sucks is insignificant compared to the millions buying up his merch. Second, chanting “Cena Sucks” is still giving him attention. Like the old saying goes, there’s no such thing as negative PR. If you really want to show your distaste for Cena, or Reigns, or whomever, then leave. Don’t go to the shows. That won’t happen, because the fans love WWE, even if they claim otherwise.
Having said all that, at least I understand chanting at someone you don’t like, or think the corporate machine is giving an undeserved push. What I don’t get is all the chants at smaller promotions and indy shows. Presumably, the smarks out there like promotions like ROH or Pro Wrestling Guerilla more because it’s “better wrestling.” Yet you still try and “Hijack” the show? Think about it from a wrestler’s point of view. Whether they’re talented or not, they’re in that ring putting their bodies on the line to entertain you, and you’re over there chanting and not even paying attention. Sure you could argue that that should be motivation for them to do better, but we all know that when the mob mentality of a fan chant kicks in, it’s not about that.
And that brings me to my last point; the aforementioned mob mentality. That’s all it is. Do you honestly think that every one of those thousands of people chanting at Cena actually think he sucks? They don’t. Do you think that the dozens of fans chanting in the gymnasium “Shut the F**k up!” actually want John Wrestler to stop cutting his promo? No. It’s mob mentality. A couple people start, and soon no one wants to be left out. Half those fans chanting at Cena are afraid that they’ll be seen as not cool if they don’t chant. Fans become so wrapped up in not being left out of a chant, that they don’t even think about what they’re chanting!
Now, I’ll admit that there are times and circumstances when a good chant can actually enhance a show; one that feels organic. But you’re lucky to get one of those a night. Instead, we get 3 or 4 chants a match sometimes. We don’t need smarks trying to come up with something clever to chant just so they can see if they can make it on the next Botchamania. In short, give us back our wrestling shows, fan chants. Stop trying to be the show, instead of being a part of it.
I have heard recent rumblings that the Clueless Wrestling Columnist is working on a new episode and plans to return this Fall. I am not sure exactly what the topic is, but I am sure that it will be something worthwhile and potentially controversial. Stay tuned…
