WWE Roadblock End of the Line

By the end of this Review, you will see what I ranked as the best WWE PPV, the worst WWE PPV, the best NXT TakeOver event, and the worst NXT TakeOver event of 2016. I will also have overall grades for both WWE PPVs and NXT TakeOver events. Please keep in mind that my grading scale is different than most grading scales. As always, I show the breakdown of my wacky grading scale below. Also, stay tuned in the next day or so for my column about Dean Ambrose, as well as my thoughts on Total Nonstop Deletion.

Regarding the Roadblock Pre-Show match between Big Cass and Rusev, unfortunately, I did not watch it. Per NoDQ’s results, Rusev won the match by a count out. Both Enzo and Lana accompanied Big Cass and Rusev, respectively, which prompted the out of the ring drama to cause the count out. I think it was just another case of poor WWE booking for keeping this match and story off the main card. Perhaps there was no need for a 30-minute Iron Man Match between Sasha and Charlotte. A submission match would have been just fine. Oh well, it’s now time for a quick review with match grades.

WWE Raw Tag Team Championship: Cesaro/Sheamus Vs New Day (Big E/Kofi) w/Xavier Woods- Cesaro is still awesome and Sheamus still sucks. However, I am very happy they defeated New Day to become the new Raw Tag Team Champions. Finally, New Day drops the titles. I really hated New Day’s Christmas themed ring attire. This just proved to me that they are and will always be a children’s gimmick. I loved the brilliant finish with the fake tag between Sheamus and Cesaro that ultimately fooled Kofi and allowed Sheamus to make the pin because Kofi thought Cesaro was the legal man. Match Grade = B+

10-Minute Match: Sami Zayn Vs Braun Strowman- This match played out exactly like I thought it would when Zayn endured a beating from Strowman most of the match, only to get momentum near the end and last the ten minutes to win the match. I don’t think Mick Foley needed to show up for this match with the white towel. That was way too cliché. The crowd would have still rallied behind
Zayn for that final minute. Match Grade = B

Seth Rollins Vs Chris Jericho- I am not quite sure why WWE booked this match for a PPV with nothing on the line. The winner should have either received a Universal Championship shot for a later date or be inserted into the Main Event with Reigns and Owens. It just did not feel important enough to me. These two definitely deserved more stakes. Nonetheless, I still strongly liked the match. However, I did feel it was very predictable when Owens came to ringside, and it was super obvious that Rollins was still going to get the win, which he did after a Pedigree. Match Grade = B++

WWE Cruiserweight Championship Triple Threat Match: Brian Kendrick Vs TJ Perkins Vs Rich Swann- This match continued the trend of underwhelming Cruiserweight matches on the main roster. Let’s fast forward to the end of the match when Swann retained by pinfall. Neville made his way out to ringside and took out all three guys in an aggressive, heel-like way. Now that is definitely something I can get into going forward (I hope). Match Grade = B-

WWE Raw Women’s Championship 30-Minute Iron Man Match: Charlotte Vs Sasha Banks- What an absolutely mediocre and non-believable finish when Sasha tapped out with just a tick or two left on the clock, which forced sudden death after a 2-2- tie. Had Sasha waited those couple of seconds, she would have remained Champion. Yes, these are worked fights, but I would still appreciate logical booking so I can suspend my disbelief at least a little bit. I think a submission match (or a best out of 3 falls submission match) would have been more appropriate for this occasion, especially since Sasha tapped out (twice) anyway. Charlotte ended up winning the Raw Women’s title back (AGAIN) after a bloody Sasha tapped out to the Figure-8 in sudden death. WWE better not let Sasha win the title back on an upcoming Raw. That would just be outright ridiculous. As for Charlotte, what a 2016 it was for her as she was undefeated at major PPV events. Match Grade = B+

WWE Universal Championship: Roman Reigns Vs Kevin Owens- Many IWC fans still claim Roman Reigns cannot work a match. Yes folks, people who have never worked a match themselves are the ones claiming Reigns cannot wrestle. I know I have had a lot of disdain towards John Cena in the past, but most of that is because I could not get behind his character, especially knowing what he is capable of when he used to do the rap/thug gimmick. Look, I know Reigns is not a smart mark’s favorite style of pro wrestler, but I just do not see why everyone loves to hate him. Regardless of differences in opinion about Reigns, I think he and Owens did an admirable job in the Main Event. In the end, Jericho made his way to the ring and ended up hitting Owens with a Codebreaker. Even though Reigns won the match via DQ, this actually allowed Owens to keep the Universal Championship. After that match, JeriKO hugged and rejoiced; however, Rollins came out and he and Reigns power bombed both Jericho and Owens through announce tables to end the show. Match Grade = B++

My overall RB: EOTL grade was a B+. I somewhat enjoyed this Raw only PPV event, and it was better than the Roadblock event back in March. I thought the wrestlers did their part and busted their asses (as usual); however, a lot of the booking was just average to me, as you could probably tell by my comments above. Now that RB: EOTL has come and gone, that is it for all major WWE/NXT events for 2016. Check out my final results below. Stay tuned for an all new ViRTUE’s RAGE, coming very soon!
