NoDQ.com > Columns > A phenomenal year!
Posted by Ryan Latino on 12/11/2016 at 04:48 PM

January 2016 the Royal Rumble as Roman Reigns eliminates Rusev early he waits as the clock runs down to participant number three. The gospel like music hits and the superstar walks out hood up and then reveals himself to one of the biggest pops I can remember. Aj Styles had arrived and he hasn't looked back. What a year for him and what he has achieved is incredible.

One of the only reasons I watched TNA was for Aj Styles, the matches with Samoa Joe and Christopher Daniels stand alone as some of the best in TNA history and they catapulted it to a new level. The question always remained would he ever get to the WWE?
When he went to Japan I believed that was it and the chance had gone yet here we are at the end of 2016 and the guy hasn't put a foot wrong in my eyes.

Some guys after long stints in other promotions and travelling the world get to the WWE and fail to adapt to the WWE way of working and don't last. Or they come in with such hype and believe straight away they should be at the top and it doesn't quite work out and are soon shown the door. Yet Aj Styles has gone from strength to strength and each angle he has worked through the year has had a moment.
From the Rumble where he had a huge pop and lasted well over 30 minutes to his first angle with Chris Jericho that every wrestling fan wanted to see culminating at Wrestlemania with the match of the night along with the women's triple threat match.
Every PPV he has stolen the show and still comes out with something original not seen before. Face or heel fans love and respect what he does in the ring which is why he is so over.
His biggest strength is his ability to make others look good none more so than Reigns during their three month feud for the title where he got him to another level and made Reigns look good as champion.
Summerslam with Cena yet again they put on a master class with so many false finishes that they had the crowd and everyone watching in the palm of their hands. This lead to WWE giving him the baton and letting him run with it and being the face of Smackdown and boy has he delivered. I can't remember anyone in their debut year having such am impact and continue to have five star match after match.

With the awards coming up there is nobody more deserving for Superstar of the year than Aj Styles. I hope he has a long reign as champion as he fully deserves it after so many years of being overlooked. The champ that runs the camp is my superstar of 2016 and I can't wait for 2017 and what the phenomenal one will do next?
