NoDQ.com > Columns > Marking Out - The Jeff Hardy Question
Posted by Brian Slaughter on 02/08/2010 at 08:16 AM

I've seen this question asked countless times since January 4th - Did TNA make a mistake debuting Jeff Hardy when his future is so uncertain?

Reportedly, TNA hasn't signed him to a long term deal so for now, there's no harm, no foul, right? No one knows what's going to happen with his court case. Hardy himself seems absolutely confident that he'll be cleared of all charges, and we have no reason not to believe him. Frankly, however, there's no reason we should believe him, either. Of course he's going to say that. Showing any public doubt could look bad for him in the courtroom, and could affect any backstage plans at TNA assuming the reports are true and he has no contract with them right now.

This is all stating the obvious, though, and doesn't address the REAL underlying question - Did TNA promise their audience something they may not be able to deliver when they debuted Jeff Hardy on January 4th? That's a harder question to answer.

It depends on whether or not you think what you saw on that monumental three-hour live show implied what you could continue to expect from TNA. To a certain extent, that's exactly how it's been. They introduced compelling angles with Jarrett, Foley, Hogan and Bischoff, and "The Band" just to name a few, so you'd be within your rights if you felt TNA wrote a check they couldn't cash when they debuted Hardy on that show. It's not unreasonable to expect to continue seeing him every now and then.

On the other hand, things like that happen all the time. For example, Rob Van Dam was the surprise 25th entrant in the 2009 Royal Rumble. He hasn't been seen or heard from in the WWE since. Can we then say that WWE promised its viewers something they didn't deliver when they brought RVD in for that appearance? Of course not. It was just a one time treat for the fans. If we never see Hardy again in TNA, the same could be said for him.

Jeff Hardy was, reportedly, booked for a one-time appearance at the January 4th live edition of Impact. His agent is reportedly still negotiations with TNA for a more long-term commitment, but even if that completely falls through, it doesn't change the fact that his one-off appearance was good television. Granted, the Steel Asylum match could have been booked better, but the sight of Jeff Hardy making his way through the crowd in the Impact Zone, laying out Homicide, and perching atop the Asylum as his music played was just plain fun.

I have my fingers crossed that Jeff gets his business taken care of so he can sign with TNA and continue to have a brilliant career, but even if that was the last time we see him on Impact, I'm glad he was there.
