Show Some Respect
by Brian Slaughter

The internet has spoken. TNA is full of old, decrepit wrestlers looking for one last paycheck. Broke, desperate hangers-on have ridden Hogan's coat tails into the TNA locker room for one last shot to hog the spotlight and make a quick buck in the process while Dixie Carter sits idly by, either too helpless or too clueless to prevent it.

What do we, the internet wrestling community base that assumption on? Two things. First, of course, is age. Ric Flair is 61, Scott Hall is 52, Sean Waltman is 37, and the Nasty Boys came over on the Mayflower. Certainly there are wrestlers that can still perform at 37, but Waltman is a special case in that he's reportedly consumed enough drugs to have the body of an 80 year old. Secondly, and more importantly, most of these desperate hangers-on were present during the fall of WCW, and many were even blamed for causing it.

Fortunately, that's all a load of crap. No matter the age of these recent TNA acquisitions, they still have something meaningful to contribute to the promotion, whether by their actual wrestling ability or simply by their name value, locker room leadership and experience. These guys have been to the big dance. They've performed in front of 50,000+ screaming fans. Most of the younger guys that we, the internet fans, are so infatuated with, have not. They need the guidance of these veterans. That's what guys like Hogan, Hall, Waltman and Flair bring to the table.

As far as the argument that they're taking time and attention away from the real TNA talent? Also crap. Thus far since Hogan has stepped in front of the camera, he and Bischoff and "The Band" have taken MAYBE 15 minutes out of a 2 hour show. In other words, they've been on camera just enough to bring in those who might watch Impact because they're there without drawing too much attention to what we all understand to be the real attraction of TNA... the young, talented athletes.

Ultimately, the test of whether or not TNA has become a "wrestling retirement home" as it's so often called is who gets the pushes, and who gets the belts. As I write this article, the oldest TNA championship holder is Tara, the Knockout Champion at 38. Doug Williams, the X-Division Champion, is 37. Awesome Kong and Hamada, the Knockout Tag Team Champions, are 32 and 28 respectively. Hernandez and Matt Morgan, the TNA Tag Team Champions, are 36 and 33 respectively. A.J. Styles, the TNA World Champion, is 31. In other words, there is no title-holder in TNA over the age of 40. That hardly seems like a retirement home. By comparison, WWE has three title-holders over the age of 40.

So, lay off the "old guys" and show some respect. Most of them are there for a reason. The Nasty Boys, though? That one I'll grant you.
