Why HBK & Taker Shouldn't/Should Happen

Professional wrestling is a fickle business, especially it's fans. People's allegiances can change from year to year, sometimes month to month. A fan can have a favorite superstar one Wrestlemania and then want him to get his ass handed to him to the next (here's looking at you Cena). I can't say I'm above it either. A few months ago, when the subject of Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker at this year's Wrestlemania was brought up, I hated the idea. But now, I feel it needs to happen.

Let's go back a year. Michaels had just gone through a storyline with JBL that ended at February's No Way Out, leaving him nothing for Mania. So when he says he wants to prove that he is indeed Mr. Wrestlemania by ending The Undertaker's undefeated streak, I got excited. Let's be honest, in the years after you found out what really goes on in professional wrestling, it's hard to have favorites anymore. The wrestlers have got to truly put on a show to win the crowd over. But it deserves to be pointed out that for a solid four years, my favorite match had been HBK vs. Kurt Angle at WM 21. In a packed card, Michaels and Angle stole the show that night and I expected one half of that equation to do it again.

The match did not disappoint. I remember the recaps afterward and everyone was praising it as the only thing that saved a rather lackluster Mania (I agreed). I felt like in a business that is slowly turning toward the younger guys, HBK and Taker went out there in an even home field advantage and showed the rookies how it's done.

Fast forward a year later and the first mention of this return match does not excite me. The reason is because I feel like neither scenario would be a good one. If HBK loses, we basically get the same match we saw last year. If HBK wins, then I have a problem with it and here's why. At this point in his career, The Undertaker does not necessarily need to have an undefeated streak at Wrestlemania. However, it's something that probably nobody else will ever even come close to. Edge quietly almost did it, until losing to the Deadman two years ago. I feel that if someone were to break Taker's streak, it should be somebody that can use it as a talking point, such as how Jericho still refers to the fact that he beat The Rock and Stone Cold in the same night. HBK has maybe one or two years left in him and I just feel beating The Undertaker would do nothing for his career.

So since the rumors first began, I have been against this match. That was until the Royal Rumble. Nobody sells moves like Shawn Michaels and nobody sells a story like Shawn Michaels. I was at the Philips Arena in Atlanta and even from where I was sitting I could see the pain in his face. I swear, Michaels should win an Academy Award at some point. I consider myself to be someone that knows what's going on, but he still brought me into the story. At that moment, I realized I needed this to end with the two of them going at it one more time.

My stance is still the same as when I first heard about the match. I truly don't feel Michaels should win. But now, I also truly feel that this match needs to happen. It's time once again for two veterans to go out there and show everyone how it's done.
