NoDQ.com > Columns > Falls Count Anywhere: The Stretched Undertaker
Posted by Erik McNeal on 11/20/2009 at 09:40 AM

The Undertaker is not looking too good. He rarely has matches, and when he does it has not been beyond 10 minutes in the ring and his work looks limited. I wonder if he should have closed out at WrestleMania 25…

I have watched the Undertaker for the past 11 years of my time of being a wrestling fan. It almost seemed like he never missed a beat, no matter whether he was the Deadman/Lord of Darkness or the American Badass/Big Evil. All the way up to WrestleMania 25, which I consider one of the best matches of 2009 and of his career, the Undertaker seemed frozen in time. He never changed but the people who fell before him and that cheered for him, changed. Lately, that isn’t the case it appears to me.

Undertaker returned in classic fashion at Summer Slam ’09, but not much happened after that. We were given some very LIMITED appearances, short matches... and then he becomes the World Hvt. Champion in a sorry excuse of a “hell in a cell” match. That move was just baffling to me.

I don’t know about any politic concerning CM Punk or whatever, I don’t think now a month removed, that it was the smart thing to do. I think the only reason he is the World champ now is because of his seniority and the match at WrestleMania. Add to that, the fuel to CM Punk’s heat is lost because it worked best against Jeff Hardy, who wanted out and there was no star to step up as a World champ. So I feel it was a matter of circumstance.

These frequent tag team matches on TV, short squashes, or even the triple threats and fatal 4 ways are a mask to me to try to drag the dead to life that much longer. I haven’t been as impressed with the Undertaker that I usually am as a fan.

I would take Undertaker away for a year if it meant he’d be better in the ring. Even if I only saw him from January to April every year, I would accept that. I’m worried that after maybe his finest performance and this ever-present rumor that WrestleMania XXVI will be the retirement match, or when the streak will end or whatever against either Chris Jericho or John Cena… I don’t feel it will be the big match that it should be because we are looking at the Phenom past his prime, for the first time in his career.

We’ve seen it when countless guys are past the apex and on the downslide for many years.

Roberts. Luger. Foley. Hogan. Flair.

I don’t want that to happen to Mark Calaway. I want for his legacy and career to close on the highest note possible, not a Ric Flair-ish “This was my last match” just to come back because of the itch, or squander in obscure territories reminiscent of “The Wrestler.” I only ask when is it time to say goodbye?

I think, for the sake of himself, the Undertaker needs to make his final disappearance soon because I don’t know what shape he’ll be in, come this March.
