Have you ever watched one of John Cena's Ohio Valley Wrestling matches? How about his training videos? Even the first time he appeared in the WWE?
At that time, John Cena was a good wrestler. Today, he is at Main Event status, which seems to indicate that wrestling skills are no longer required (with few exceptions).
John is also a little too big in my opinion. He doesn't move he used to. He's stiff and not as flexible. Too much muscle I guess.
From time to time, we see Cena flipping over a wrestler's back and give them a bulldog, and that move looks good. But when we see him go to the top rope, forget it, he should never do that.
His hip-hop character is dead, but he is still hip-hop in his ways. His promos are horrible. Way over the top. My biggest problem with The Rock was that he over-acted. That turns me off as a fan of acting and prowrestling. The same goes for John Cena. He goes over the top. His in-ring abilities are now dreadful. My friends and I joke about the "Five Moves of Doom".
The WWE pushed him too fast, too soon. In my opinion, no one, NO ONE, should ever hold the WWE or World Titles until they have been in the WWE for at least five years. No one, should ever hold any championships in their first year. That first year should be reserved for letting the fans know who you are, and then working your way to the top. Then the next stepping stone between years 2 and 5 should be earning and possibly winning one of the midcard titles.
Then, in year five, go for the top gold if you are there. John Cena was pushed to the top too soon. We see the same constant storylines for Cena because he is always in the title picture, and so are the other guys like Orton, Triple H, The Undertaker, etc.
I am also a proponent of letting a champion hold onto a title for at least 9 months. I was watching a video on youtube the other day, where there were pop ups on the setup for the Hogan-Rock match. Here's my WWE Did You Know moment:
Did you know that Hulk Hogan held the WWE Title for about four years, meanwhile, The Rock never held it more than four months? Now, I didn't check that out, but that's what we are seeing. Orton has the title for four months, then Cena, then Triple H, then back to Cena then back to Orton, etc.
Since November of 2005, the following people have held the WWE Championship (in no particular order): JBL, Rob Van Dam, Edge, Triple H, Randy Orton, John Cena, Jeff Hardy, and Batista. Twice, the title was left vacant. And there were trade-offs, the WWE Title in the last three years has changed hands 17 times (including the title being left vacant). 17 Times! Hogan held it once for four years.
So, the WWE needs to do something about its Main Event scene, and let's start with Cena. First of all, his character is Hogan-esque in the ring and Warrior-esque on the mic. He sounds like a mumbling child when he speaks. His promos often get very out of control.
He is a heel. Get over it WWE, your core demographic thinks Cena shold be heel. A heel change could freshen up his character. He is a fan of PG, so that he dosen't have to go heel. Face it Cena, the majority of fans love to hate you. He is a Vanilla Ice-Enimem wannabe.
Then, we need to take Cena as far away from the title as possible. He's 32 with 5 WWE Championship reigns and 2 World Title reigns. If he takes his career to 40, we will see him Main Eventing 96 straight Pay-Per-Views. 96!!!! Enough is enough. Let him go heel and have him build young stars for right now. Give him the IC Title and let him hold it for a year. Have him form a tag team with the soon returning Lance Cade and have them run amuck in the WWE for awhile.
I find it ridiculous that the WWE builds in a fan scream track to his music. You can tell this because the music stops, so do the accolades. In comes the chorus of boos. WWE, please let us have the Cena we want. A Cena free of being the fan favorite that he is not. Send hom to ECW to bring back his skills and to really become a heel. He has plenty of years left in him, and it looks like he will need this job because his acting career is not panning out.
That's my rant. I went through Hogan once, don't bring him back. Stop recycling storylines, really, I promise, producing new ones will not hurt the environment.
Here is who I would like to see Cena face without a title involved:
1. Jack Swagger. He took Cena to school and could do it again.
2. Mark Henry. Power vs power
3. The Miz. Again, another young guy who schooled Cena
4. Rey Mysterio. Speed vs Power
5. Dolph Ziggler. Ego vs Ego
6. Kane. Have they even met one-on-one in the ring before?
