NoDQ.com > Columns > Bad Booking Beatdown - Indy Talent Divide
Posted by Mark Kelso on 11/05/2009 at 01:24 AM

News is swirling among the IWC (for those of you who are uninformed, the IWC stands for "internet wrestling community") is that DragonGate USA is trying to compete with Ring of Honor for talent. Evidence being that Davey Richards and the Young Bucks are currently signed to compete for DGUSA on 'Mania weekend, and not ROH.

The significance of this decision may be lost on the talent, because until recently missing a date on a ROH show was commonplace, especially 6 months in advance. Ring of Honor is currently without two of its more composed main eventers in Nigel McGuiness and Bryan Danielson for good, and with the loss of these performers during one of their major shows, and the addition of a DGUSA show on the same date IN THE SAME STATE, we could be looking at some sort of Indy wrestling version of the "Monday Night Wars".

What does this mean going forward? I assume it will mean a de-pushing for anyone who "crossed the line" from one brand to the other, weather one will be admitted to or not I do believe. For one thing, it would be a foolish decision to put the title on Davey Richards within the next 6 months; something that could have been a possibility before this news, and the Young Bucks are quickly raising up the tag team ladder...which is headed up by DAVEY RICHARDS at the moment. That, most likely, will mean a title change for the American Wolves...possibly more early than planned.

This doesn't even take into consideration the effect all this will have on the Wrestlemania Weekend Festivities for WWE. The WWE knows that the ROH event during 'Mania weekend draw huge crowds, and potentially pull a few dollars out of their pocket, and now the target may be on DGUSA's head. ROH is slated to run its Saturday show at 2PM, which would mean that the show would end at about 5PM. DGUSA has yet to state what time their show would start...Which means they have to choose between going head to head with ROH or the WWE. A big decision for any company, let alone an upstart expansion brand like DGUSA. Drawing the ire of the WWE may not be what this promotion needs while it's on the cusp of greatness.

All this is speculation, of course. Nothing is confirmed in the world of Independent professional wrestling, but it does NOT look good for Ring of Honor's booking team.
