Blowin' Smoke with Kemper Jones

I found this week's Raw to be intriguing. I have a ton of thing's to get to, but there's one thing I want to mention first.

I’ve started writing a timeline for my first SvR 2010 create-a-storyline and hope to make some progress on that this week but we’ll see. I’ll keep you updated. If any of you have created any good storylines send me an email. I have it for Xbox 360 just so you know.

Raw 10/26/09 Afterthoughts

The night after Bragging Rights rightfully started off with the captain of Team Smackdown, Chris Jericho, and The Big Show coming down to the ring. The revelation came that the reason Show turned on Raw was because he made a deal with Teddy Long that made him the number one contender for Undertaker’s world title. I figured he would say he did it because he can be on any show so he doesn’t care which brand wins. The end result made a lot more sense though.

Guest hosts, Kyle Busch and Joey Lagano, came out after doing doughnuts in the parking lot to confront the Unified Tag Team Champions. It seemed that Busch was playing a face while Lagano had more of a heel attitude. They set up HHH/Show and Jericho/Kofi Johnson Kingston for tonight. They also stated that they would be determining the next opponent for John Cena’s WWE title.

Jericho vs. Kofi started after the break. Jericho maintained control most of the match. After a codebreaker, he couldn’t follow up with a pin fast enough and got hit with Trouble in Paradise while arguing with the ref. Do I have to mention again that I’m sick of seeing Jericho lose? Little did I know this was only the beginning of what ended up being a career-altering night for Kofi.

Legacy presented Orton with a Randy Orton themed stock car. I don’t follow Nascar but I’m assuming this is a car they’ve used in the past. Isn’t that sweet, considering Dibiase was treated like a bad dog last week? He’s so forgiving. They also told Randy that they had another surprise involving Cena later on.

The backstage skit involving Eve Torres, The Miz, Jack Swagger, and the hosts was done well. The Miz and Swagger were both trying to vie for Eve’s attention, as well as stating they’re case to be Cena’s next challenger.

Just before the commercial they showed a Sheamus vignette along with the promise of a Raw debut for him tonight. Does WWE really need anymore reason to stop the brand separation at this point? Apparently, anyone can be a free agent. He made his ECW debut on June 30th. That means he’s been around for not even four months. If we’re to believe the “free agent” garbage then explain why ECW would sign him for less than four full months.

Melina and Santino had a mixed tag match against Chavo and Jillian. I didn’t pay much attention to this match though. When was the last time that Santino actually wrestled on Raw? I do recall saying to my girlfriend that I really hope this is the last time we see Jillian and Melina in the ring together. Jillian seems to botched half of Melina’s moves. You could see the frustration on Melina’s face. Hornswoggle made an appearance during this match but afterwards was served with a cease and desist order for his wearing his DX garbs.

Justin Roberts announced Cena but Rhodes and Dibiase came out instead. They challenged Cena for the title at Survivor Series. Cena went on to explain that they haven’t earned the opportunity. He also went into a speech about how people want something different in WWE. It was then announced that Legacy would go up against MVP and Mark Henry.

That match as up next. For some reason, Henry was made the punching bag for Legacy most of the match. It must’ve been hard for him to sell the headlock from Cody the way he did. Let’s be honest, when you got a guy like him in there against Cody, what can they actually do to hurt him? After a hot tag to MVP, Henry got in a shot from the apron that led to MVP picking up the win for the team. Am I the only one that noticed how long they held the pin before the ref got over there?

Randy Orton came out trying to make a case for a rematch against Cena. This is where things got interesting.

“He never really talks or does anything to further his agenda. I think the fact that WWE has a guy that isn't Jamaican playing a Jamaican is something that's gonna put a low ceiling on what he'll be able to do in the future. At least they stopped claiming he's from there.”

The above is something I wrote in my very first column. The past few weeks of HHH making the phony Jamaican comments to Kofi were obviously meant as a way of distancing him from the gimmick and I think what followed shows that it worked.

After Kofi ran off Legacy during the main event at the PPV I figured we’d see a Kofi/Cody feud. How wrong I was. We see Kofi standing on top of the car that Randy got from his friends. He then proceeded to key it, beat the hell out of it with a crowbar, and dump paint on it. He didn’t seem nervous which surprised me considering this will be seen as his “breakout” moment if he continues down the main event road they’re laying out in front of him. This is a big opportunity for him to take it to the next level. I’m kind of wish we were seeing a push like this for MVP though but I’m happy to see Kofi get the exposure. It’s reinvigorated my interest in his character. I’m thinking this may lead to a Team Kofi vs. Team Orton traditional Survivor Series match as I think it may be too early to have him go 1-on-1 with Orton.

Eve was announced as special ring announcer for the next match. I’m wondering if this was a serious audition. After watching ECW last week, I realize that the new girl they hired for announcing is pretty bad. Eve wasn’t much better though.

The Miz took it to Evan Bourne for most of the match until Jack Swagger made his way out and distracted The Miz. Miz left the ring to confront Swagger only to have Bourne slingshot himself onto both of them. This allowed Bourne to make it back into the ring while Miz was counted out.

Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne were announced as guest hosts for next week. This has been rumored for a while now. I assume Ozzy will do most of the hosting duties while Sharon will be there to translate whatever the hell he’s saying.

Sheamus made his debut by squashing Jamie “Where Have You Been?” Noble. This was the first time I’ve seen him in action and I must say he’s a bad ass. However, as a big guy I really don’t see him ever getting past the level of a Snitzky or Mike Knox. If he ever has an gold, it probably won’t be more than tag titles. I wouldn’t mind being wrong about that though.

The main event between Big Show and HHH ended up becoming a no-DQ lumberjack match (this is the third time since Piven hosted that we’ve seen one of these) with most of the Raw roster surrounding the ring and Cena being appointed referee. Jericho made his way out of the arena through the crowd as the lumberjacks came down, leaving Show alone.

Big Show and HHH were back and forth for the most part. Towards the end of the match most the superstars entered the ring and hit a signature move on Big Show. He did fight them off for a while so he didn’t look completely bad. It ended after a Sweet Chin Music, Attitude Adjustment, and Pedigree.

As the show came to an end Lagano and Busch came out and announced that Hornswoggle (wtf) talked them into scheduling a HHH/HBK/Cena triple threat at Survivor Series.

I feel that this weeks Raw gave me a lot of what I feel it has been missing. Namely, new things. We all know most of the feuds and stars have gotten stale over time and it really is time to mix things up. The Miz, Swagger, and Kingston definitely stole the show. I’m thinking the spotlight is on them right now and it’s up to them and the fans to see how far they can go. This could be the youth movement we’ve all been waiting for.

On the other hand, we’re still going to see Cena/HHH but at least they’re involving HBK to make it not as stale. But, these three aren't really the "different" that Cena mentioned early. At least it might lead to some decent stories as to how D-X will coexist with the WWE title between them. If it were up to me I'd still have them out of the title picture though.

I’m looking forward to Smackdown except for the fact that I’m worried about what’s gonna happen to CM Punk. With Undertaker/Big Show and Batista/Mysterio I can’t imagine who he will be working with. If they continue with Punk being what appears to be McMahon’s golden boy, they could set up a triple threat Punk/Taker/Show where Show is just a pawn. Please, oh please let this be the case. I’m sure there will be some drama between Jerishow with Show being the number one contender.

I should get a Smackdown column done Saturday or Sunday. Be sure to get to me with any comments or critiques.
