Blowin' Smoke with Kemper Jones

Bragging Rights 2009 Afterthoughts

FYI, I only got two of my predictions right, bummer.

The Miz vs. John Morrison

I must say, I expected more out of this match. It seemed really slow and never really got a steady groove going on. They both hit they’re signature moves but things just didn’t click the way they should have when you consider these two should know each other much better. Though I’m extremely happy that The Miz won, the ending was horrible. I’ve seen Morrison kick out after much more punishment. The fact that The Miz won after knocking Morrison off the ropes made him look weak. For a guy they’re really trying to build I think it was a mistake.

Michelle McCool, Beth Phoenix, and Natalya vs. Gail Kim, Melina, and Kelly Kelly

Considering the Smackdown vs. Raw nature of show along with the best 2-out of-3 stipulation, was there any surprise that SD picked up the victory here? If the Raw Divas had won it would have made the 7-on-7 that’s had so much focus on it pointless.

The Undertaker vs. CM Punk vs. Batista vs. Rey Mysterio for the World Heavyweight Championship

This match ended up playing out better than I thought it would. It wasn’t the clusterf*** that most matches with more than two competitors become. I like that the majority of the time CM Punk was on offense, he was going after Taker. As much as they were trying to put over the idea that Punk was scared of him, he took it to him whenever he could. The match kept a good pace except for a short period of time when it was just Taker/Batista in the ring.

I was surprised and disappointed that Undertaker walked out with the title, but at the same time we all know there’s been too many title changes lately. If Punk had won it would have meant that creative realized the mistake it made at Hell in a Cell by taking the belt off of him. It’s no fun to see him not win but I think it’s only a matter of time till he wins it again.

The story of the match ended up taking place after the match when we saw what appears to be an all out heel turn for Batista. He absolutely decimated Rey Mysterio. I think this is a good thing. It gives Smackdown another main event heel and it does it in the easiest way by having him destroy someone as beloved by the mainstream fan as Rey. I’m looking forward to seeing how this plays out. The only problem I have with it is the reason for Batista being mad. If him and Mysterio were truly such great friends, he should understand why Rey broke up the pin. It makes him looked like too much of a sore loser instead of a badass.

Team Raw vs. Team Smackdown

This match played out for the most part the way I thought it would. Each participant had the opportunity to spend some time in the ring. I think that Tyson Kidd & DH Smith used they’re time in well and showcased their skills. Please let this continue.

I didn’t expect it to end the way it did though. Big Show turning his back on Team Raw should’ve been something I saw coming, but I didn’t. It doesn’t really give Team Smackdown much to “brag” about though when they didn’t even win on their own.

John Cena vs. Randy Orton 60-Minute Iron Man Match for the WWE Championship

As with most people, I was highly skeptical as to whether or not they could pull off a full hour and keep me interested. I expected to fast-forward through most of this match, but I’m astonished that I actually kept it playing the whole time. There were a lot of decisions but each one would have been a legitimate fall in a normal match.

I find it odd that Orton couldn’t hold on for another 5 or 6 seconds until time expired though. He could’ve sweated it so that they would’ve headed into overtime.

Orton was by far the star of this match. He played his character spot on. Most of his offense against Cena was vicious. If only Cena hadn’t rolled away before the explosion though.
Overall

There were few surprises at this PPV but it set up a clean slate for most of the WWE. I know I didn’t pay for the PPV, but I would have if I had $40 to spend on a PPV. Gotta send a thanks to my gf's brother once again for the tape on the same night of the show.
