Blowin' Smoke with Kemper Jones

Smackdown 10/23/2009 & Bragging Rights Predictions

I’m at work right now and am trying to get this done quickly so if it’s not that good I apologize. Just really wanted to get it up asap since the PPV is in a matter of hours.

The show started off with Team Smackdown individually making they’re way down to the ring and voicing why they would be the most influential person in the match on Sunday. I have to mention the comment that Lawler made bout Eric Escobar having denture marks on his neck from Vickie, priceless. They’re playing this angle where Jericho is “scared” of Kane very well. I’m still thinking that Kane will be involved with Jerishow in some way after the PPV.

Jericho made his team, except Kane go up against R-Truth, Matt Hardy, Finlay, and The Hart Dynasty with the stipulation that if they lost they would be replaced. To my surprise, the original Team Smackdown lost. I’m having a really hard time understanding why they did this. On top of everything, throughout the broadcast they kept trying to put over the new team as “more formidable” than the original. If anything, the team is weaker now. I’ll admit that I wasn’t too keen on Cryme Tyme and Eric Escobar being part of the team I think they made a huge mistake by taking Ziggler and McIntyre off the team. If they were on the team instead of Hardy and Finlay I think it would be the best best. Congrats to The Hart Dynasty though. I’m hoping they use their PPV debut to get noticed and hopefully get in the Tag Team title hunt soon.

One other thing I have to mention is that during the match, Lawler referred to the participants from both teams as “A who’s who of who cares.”. I think this was a horrible line of commentary. Regardless of the Smackdown vs. Raw theme, you shouldn’t bury nine wrestlers with a single line of dialogue. Of course, I don’t know if this line was fed to him from backstage or not but it just seemed really distasteful.

Cut backstage and we see Scott Armstrong, CM Punk, and Teddy Long going over the plans for the evening. After Armstrong said he wasn’t going to screw anyone, Vince McMahon showed up to “talk to him”. Being as they’re keeping the World title focus on Punk/Undertaker, I’m actually starting to feel a little better about the possibility of Punk winning it back some time this week. Batista and Mysterio don’t seem to be as involved in the angle.

John Morrison squared off against Mike Knox in what was another spotfest for Morrison. I will say that for a big guy, Knox isn’t that horrible to watch. He pulls off some vicious moves and kind of like the creepy promos he does. I think it’s cool how they show them during matches. It kind of reminds me of when they used to do that during Superstars and Challenge back when I was a kid.

Morrison won after delivering Starship Pain though it looked like he landed on his face. As much as I want to like Morrison, I’m tiring of him really quick. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, his promos have gone from great while he was teaming with The Miz to downright atrocious now that he’s a face. Come on Michael Hayes, this guy can talk, just stop writing it for him.

We saw a backstage segment featuring Mae Young, Michelle McCool, Beth Phoenix, and Mickie James. Mickie and Beth threatened Michelle’s title and Mae slapped her at the end. Once again, why the hell did they move Mickie and Beth to the same show. Separate these two already because you know as soon as one of them win that belt, they’re gonna feud again.

Mysterio and Batista were prepping for their match against Kane and Jericho. They plugged Batista’s new DVD and continued they’re lovefest. I’m really getting tired of these two being all lovey-dovey together. When the match began, Jericho and Kane maintained control for most of the match until Batista got the hot tag. Though I was disappointed to see Jericho/Kane lose, I am glad that Jericho wasn’t pinned for once.

Mickie James squashed Layla pretty quick. I really don’t have anything to say about this match. To be honest, I fast-forwarded through most of it.

CM Punk carried a microphone as he made his way out to the ring for the main even rematch from Breaking Point. He delivered a great cocky heel promo about how he was guaranteeing he’d win the belt. He had a smile on his face through most of the match from the assumption that he would win due to a screwjob. When Punk asked Long for a chair, Long hesitated before handing the chair to Scott Armstrong who then got choke-slammed. Punk went on to beat Undertaker down and apply the anaconda vise. There was no ref to ring the bell so Long called for a new one. Shortly after a new ref arrived, Taker got out of the vise and applied Hell’s Gate until Punk tapped. Long looked like he was going to cry because it didn’t work out the way it was supposed to. I think it’s about time that Vinnie Mac is the one that makes sure Punk takes home the gold this Sunday.

Bragging Rights Predictions

Remember, I’m at work so I’m going to make these kind of quick…

* Smackdown Divas defeat Raw Divas
* John Morrison defeats The Miz (As much as I wish The Miz would win, I don’t see it happening.)
* Cena will become WWE Champion once again. I think there’s no way that he’ll be taken off of Raw and his loss to HHH last weeks leads me to believe we’ll hear him say, “There was no way my last appearance on Raw was going to be me losing,” on Monday. This will probably lead to a HHH/Cena feud for the belt as if that feud isn’t as tired as Cena/Orton.
* I’m picking CM Punk to win the World Heavyweight Championship even though there’s a part of me that thinks it’s a long shot. Hopefully, the people are over the backstage drama that led him to losing it prematurely at Hell in a Cell.
* In case it wasn’t clear in the beginning of this column, I see no way Team Smackdown can beat a team as stacked as Raw. This might be the mismatch of the year.

I’m working all day so hopefully my gf’s brother will drop a tape of the PPV off before I get home. I really don’t want to wait till 2 a.m. to start it like last time, but since I’m not paying for it I can’t complain if it does take a while. See you early next week with my Bragging Rights post-show and Raw thoughts.
