This is my debut column here on NoDQ.com! Contact me with feedback by clicking on my name above! I hope you enjoy...
Thanks for taking the time to check out my first attempt at a column centered on one of my all time passions...professional wrestling. Now, I'm sure many who click on this link may wonder why I've chosen the title Basic Marksmanship. I can assure you that it has nothing to do whatsoever at how well anyone can hit a target...rather my belief that no matter how cynical any wrestling fan becomes, that we are all Marks for the business at the end of the day. I say this with no disrespect intended, as I know the term "Mark" can often offend wrestling fans.
My goal with this column is to take as objective a look at the products that professional wrestling are giving us, the fans week in and week out. WWE, TNA, ROH, and the scores of promotions around the world have give us all ample does for our wrestling fixes that we all crave, but from what I've gathered from the online community, those doses don't quite seem to be giving the majority of wrestling fans the rush they are looking for. My question to the fan community is this: What is missing in Professional Wrestling right now, that has left you detached from it? Now I know this question doesn't apply to every person that will read this column. I'm sure there are many fans out there who are satisfied with what they are seeing live and on t.v. week in and out, and that is a great thing. I do, however know that when it comes to online wrestling fans, none are as colorful, insightful, and all around interesting as those are not content with that they are seeing. That's why I've opened this question up to everyone who humbles me with taking the time to read this. I want to see what common link there is amongst us all that may be leaving up all still wanting at the end of every Raw, SmackDown, Impact,etc..
I feel it only right that I give my own feeling on this question since I am asking you all to take the time to tell me. From where I sit, the biggest problems in professional wrestling today boils down to the two most essential parts of the product: lack of substantial new talent pushes, and overall wrestling on the shows week in and week out. I'll start with the latter of my two points. Right now may be one the best times I can ever remember for talent in professional wrestling. There is an overwhelming number of young, talented wrestlers across all the major U.S. promotions...yet so many seem to be marketed only as midcard talent, in some cases for years now, while the mainstay main eventers are used in and out every week, constantly interchanged to recreate old feuds with only slightly different dynamics then those before them. When was the last time WWE dared to push a main event with a superstar other than the established top tier of Cena, Undertaker, Orton, Edge, HHH and HBK? Don't get my wrong, they are of course the big money, marquee talent the company needs to sell tickets..but there comes a point when we all want to see the newer, younger crop of talent get there moment to shine. All it takes is one good main event outing, and the likes of a John Morrison, Dolph Ziggler, Kofi Kingston...the list goes on and on..can become an overnight main event sensation. The midcard is a perfect place for wrestlers to perfect their trade..but there comes that time where midcard talent will forever be typecast in that spot, because they've never been given the chance to proven anything different.
In the case of TNA, i find the biggest problem to be much the same. Young talent is often booked into matches with long time mainevent staples, that often times results in less then stellar matches. A.J. Styles vs Sting, Abyss vs Mick Foley, Hernandez and Nash feuding..yes it highlights the two factions of wrestlers in TNA, the new generation and the old, but most often it only showcases that the young talent, from a ring work standpoint, is simply outdoing those billed above them. TNA is at a point now where the likes of Nash, Sting, Booker T, Steiner...they do very little to help sell tickets or PPV buys. TNA was founded on the concept and foundation of their X Division style of wrestling...and somewhere along the way..that division, style and attitude has been lost..and the product suffers because of it.
Lastly, and more specifically in regards to WWE, I simply don't feel that their programming provides enough actual in ring wrestling. Yes I get that the drama and story drives the fans interest towards matches..but often times it takes away from valuable time that could be spent in ring with those same talents building a great story and arc while giving fans the matches they are paying their hard earned money (in tight times) for.
