Hell in a Cell 2009 Afterthoughts

I'll start off by saying I'm really skeptical about these themed PPVs that WWE has started doing. Breaking Point was OK, but I feel that the submission aspect didn't fit 2 of the 3 matches it was implemented in. In my opinion, my concerns were again justified following this past Sunday.

Undertaker vs. CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship - Hell in a Cell

I'm know there's not a whole lot I can say here that hasn't been said about this match already. Considering Undertakers history with HiaC matches I feel this match was very underwhelming. There was little use of the cell. HiaC matches only seem to be interesting when the competitors get out and do some amazing spots on top of the cage. I was extremely surprised to see this match open the show. I'm sure most of you have heard the reasons behind this as well as Punk's title loss. Once again, backstage politics decided the outcome of this one instead of intelligent writing. Punk's been on a roll lately and has catapulted himself to one of the top heel spots in the company. Taking the title off him does nothing but guarantee some lackluster title defenses by the Undertaker and a more than likely stale Batista/Taker feud. Don't get me wrong I have nothing but respect for what he's done during his tenure in the company, but we all know he's not in the shape he used to be. Now that I'm hearing the rumored Smackdown main event for Bragging Rights will be Batista/Taker/Punk/Mysterio in a Fatal Four Way I figure the only reason for that is to take the workload off the Deadman.

John Morrison vs. Dolph Ziggler for the Intercontinental Championship

I thought this was a great match. I even mentioned to my girlfriend while we were watching it that I felt bad for these two. They were working their asses off but the crowd just sat there. The face John Morrison is nowhere near as entertaining as the heel version and his promos have just become silly. I was disappointed to not see Ziggler walk away with the strap considering he was more than likely going to win it at Breaking Point until Mysterio's suspension. Hopefully, he'll finally win it at Bragging Rights as it's been a long time coming. It's scary how much Ziggler reminds me of a 21st century Mr. Perfect and the fact that he's recently added the rolling neck snap to his arsenal only makes me think that's what they're going for.

Mickie James vs. Alicia Fox for the Divas Championship

Not a whole lot to say about this one. Kinda figured Fox would walk away champion but I'm pleasantly surprised that Mickie retained.

Chris Jericho & The Big Show vs. Batista & Rey Mysterio for the Unified Tag Team Championship
This was a good match as I expected. I rarely see anything less from Jericho. Being teamed with Jericho has given me an interest in what The Big Show is doing and I honestly can't remember ever caring what he does. Kudos to WWE for finding something for Batista and Mysterio to do at the last minute. It was a good back and forth and I loved seeing Big Show take it to Mysterio. The only thing I'm growing tired of is Show always being the deciding factor in wins for the team. I don't see them splitting Jeri-Show anytime soon considering they're a major part of both main shows, but I don't think I'm the only one that can see how they're gonna do it.

Randy Orton vs. John Cena for the WWE Championship - Hell in a Cell

How many times have we seen these two go at it over the past few years? I'm not gonna lie, this match and the one they had at Breaking Point were mildly more entertaining than any other match-up between the two in recent memory but I'm so tired of these two. I was surprised to see Orton go over. Title reigns just don't last anymore. Orton plays the crazy role great and his facial expressions tell the story of a truly disturbed individual (as a character, not the real person). I hope that Bragging Rights really is the end of this rivalry. Once again, not much of a reason to have this be a HiaC match as it could've just been no-DQ and it would've been the same.

Drew McIntyre vs. R-Truth

Did anyone think McIntrye would lose in his debut match? He's been pretty much decimating Truth every week for about a month now. This match was OK but to be 100% honest with you I swear I blinked and missed the ending.

Kofi Kingston vs. Jack Swagger vs. The Miz for the United States Championship

Kofi's been a great US champion over the past few months but I've been growing really tired of him. He's just become another spot guy. He never really talks or does anything to further his agenda. I think the fact that WWE has a guy that isn't Jamaican playing a Jamaican is something that's gonna put a low ceiling on what he'll be able to do in the future. At least they stopped claiming he's from there. This match was OK. I even felt the two thunderous kicks that Swagger took to the face from Kofi. I was disappointed to see Kofi retain. There's not much left for him to do as US Champ. The match probably would've benefited by having someone a little more experienced in the ring as we all know that triple threats are one of the hardest matches to make great. I loved how the Miz and Swagger teamed up on Kofi only to have the Miz turn on Swagger.

Degeneration X vs. Legacy - Hell in a Cell

You have your promotions two major titles on the line and this is the closing match. I'm thinking that this one was originally supposed to open the show but the CM Punk situation changed all that. Plus Triple H hasn't been in a closed out a PPV in a few months so this probably placated his ego. I wasn't surprised to see DX win to get their receipt from the Breaking Point loss. What I am sick of is them making HBK the weak link.

Overall Thoughts

I didn't pay for this PPV so I can't complain too much. My girlfriend’s brother lent me a tape that night after I go off of work. I really hope this gimmick PPV thing doesn't last too long. It's a good way to burn out any uniqueness WWE's specialty matches have. I understand them having the Cell matches open, midcard, and close out the show. It would've sucked to have them all in a row.

This is my first WWE article and I hope to start making it a regular thing. I'm gonna try and get my Raw thoughts up sometime today or tomorrow. I hope you enjoyed reading and I'd be happy to hear any comments. Email me at kjsafterthoughts@comcast.net.
