The Rise and Fall of WCW
By Mark Kelso (aka themiz2003k on Youtube)

This DVD is exactly what you’d expect a company like the WWE to release: As little “inside information” as they can possibly get away with, and as much self-inflation as possible. WWE thinks that letting a few choice people slightly badmouth their product is going to garner them respect while they release these disappointing documentaries…I can tell you that I personally won’t let them get away with it much longer. “The Rise and Fall of ECW” was a fair dvd, no doubt about it. Why? Because Paul E. already had all the information about ECW out in the open, so for the people who didn’t already have an inside track to that sort of backstage stuff, it seemed fresh. WCW, still to this day, leaves tons of unanswered internal questions, and this DVD does little to answer any of them. Explaining that a company that went out of business was in financial trouble is like explaining that a man without a heart is about to die…well…yeah?

I’ll go about doing these reviews in this format: Brief explanation of what I felt overall, then pros/cons section. I might star-rating some matches, but not all of them.

Pros:
Nice section on Magnum TA – A forgotten talent who most people really believed had “it,” but tragically it was stripped from him

Good rundown of the people who booked WCW. Really got into their minds as to what they were thinking (those who were interviewed, like Bill Watts)

Praised WCW for the things it did separately from the WWE during the mid 90’s, including the cruiserweights and the feuds.

Good section of matches – Broad as far as what types of matches (some cruiser, some “big time” main events, some surprisingly good encounters, etc)

Cons:
Complete lack of mention of the 4 Horsemen, basically. How could that not be mentioned in length? Granted I know they have multiple DVD’s on the subject, but I wanted to hear the higher ups opinion on the group like Bischoff and Watts, etc.

Felt shorter than the ECW dvd, which is ironic. I know for a fact it’s shorter than most of the singular superstar dvd’s.

Didn’t really go anywhere with the Ted Turner storylines. I would have liked to have seen an aside about him, since he was basically the lifeblood of the company.

Didn’t mention much if anything about its semi-feud with ECW. I felt like towards the end of the DVD it would talk about how they pilfered talent (since it was a WWE dvd on WCW) and those who were specifically plucked.

Too long of a Goldberg section. He really wasn’t “the man” for as long as they claim he was. He had about a year+ of seasoning, and then was thrown into the mix at a time where nobody could really enter into a feud credibly. It’d be comparable to the WWE doing a similar dvd and talking about Batista at length.

No talk of the commentary teams. They talked for a couple minutes about Joey Styles on the ECW dvd (granted he’s an employee…). I would have liked to have seen something on those guys.

Matches:
Ric Flair vs. Magnum T.A., Sting & Lex Luger & Barry Windham vs. Flair & Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard, Dusty Rhodes vs. Windham, Flair vs. Ricky Steamboat in Chicago, Rock & Roll Express vs. Midnight Express, Midnight Express vs. Southern Boys, Steiners vs. Sting & Lex Luger, Sting vs. Vader, Rick Rude vs. Sting, Flair vs. Hulk Hogan from Orlando, Flair vs. The Giant, Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Dean Malenko,
Syxx vs. Eddie Guerrero, Guerrero vs. Malenko, Chris Jericho vs. Juventud Guerrera, Steiners vs. Kevin Nash & Scott Hall, DDP & Karl Malone vs. Hogan & Dennis Rodman, Goldberg vs. DDP and Booker T vs. Lance Storm

Best Match: Flair vs Steamboat – *****

Overall DVD rating – 5/10
