NoDQ.com > Columns > New NoDQ column - WWE pushing new talent

This is my debut column here on NoDQ.com! Contact me with feedback by clicking on my name above! I hope you enjoy...

Today is the 2009 Summerfest.... no wait.... uh... Summerjam...... hold on, hold on..... SUMMERSUPERPLEX!
..........
.......
....
..
.
OK, it's actually called "SummerSlam," the second biggest PPV on the WWE's roster. Sorry about the silence, but a lot has gone on that I'll drop my opinions on later (TNA and the Kurt Angle issue; ROH moves to Monday nights???).

"We’re in a crisis period in WWE and we need to build new guys," said Jericho in an interview with the Baltimore Sun.

Jericho added that one of Shawn Michaels' first comments upon returning to RAW was, "Whose been built since I left?"

Sorry HBK.... in five months..... no one..... on Raw.
Chris Jericho went on record, as did The Miz, and other wrestlers not related to the McMahons or in upper executive management, about the lack of top tier stars. Jim Ross, five years ago as talent VP, told everyone to boost new stars........
The promotion has booked Randy Orton, John Cena and Triple H consistently in almost every WWE/World Hvt. title/main feud for about five years running now. In any combination of the three aforementioned, they have had near 30 matches across TV and PPV events, including many events on Raw and three WrestleMania events (22, XXIV, and 25).

Now in the past, to my recollection, guys have been pushed to the moon and down our throats in a rash span of decision making and it well, backfired.
Brock Lesnar is the biggest example... Not one undercard feud, he went through the King of the Ring and onto the WWE title and HEADLINED and WON at WrestleMania XIX against Kurt Angle, and was allowed to run down every major wrestler...except Triple H (lol). But still...one day he decides to up and bounce. The WWE got behind him and Mr. Lesnar, in my opinion, shitted on the promotion, the business, and the fans. More power to him, he's a consistent winner at life apparently.

It's understandable that the WWE is playing the game safe. There are two other major promotions that are giving them viable competition in an aspect the WWE lacks.... talent and wrestling. TNA is like a new-age WCW, for better and for worse, and Ring of Honor (ROH) is that barebones mat war type of thing. The point is that stars are more likely to get elevated at the right time with those promotions versus a guy on lets say, ECW, and prays to the Lord that he moved to Smackdown, where he might have some use. On Raw, everything is about the guest host at this time.
Stephanie Levesque (Triple H's wife) was on record stating that the storylines change to fit THE HOST. I interpret it as DAMN THE WRESTLERS who make your show. But don't take my word for it.

RAW:

* MVP.....was once proclaiming his run for the WWE title. Had a great match with Orton.... a few weeks later, is beaten in four minutes and by ONE move from Triple H. Buried.
* Evan Bourne..... a punching bag to elevate others in the past few weeks.
* Jack Swagger.... not really doing too much. His Summerslam match is a rehash of what they gave away on TV. Great talent, but not used the right way.
* Kofi Kingston..... current U.S. Champ. Not into much because his character is stuck in mud doing the same shuck n jive.
* Carlito...... after his pseudo mini feud with Primo, he's kind of dead-ended too. He has a new look, but that is about it. Stuck in the mid-card.
* Chris Masters..... he sucks in my view.
* Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase (Legacy)..... OK so are they still Orton's subordinates or a branching tag team? In any case, their push has been decent: interrupted the DX reunion by beating Triple H and Shawn Michaels with the latter's boot (LOL!!!) and also pinning HHH about two weeks ago.
* Mark Henry..... comic relief that looks like a giant M&M
* Chavo Guerrero...... the epic fail of the WWE..... a billion losses to Hornswoggle... really? Can the Guerreros still claim this cat?

SMACKDOWN:

* John Morrison.... in World Hvt. title matches; beaten CM Punk, when he was World champ, twice
* Dolph Ziggler..... close to being Intercontinental Champ; character gets better every week
* Tyson Kidd/David Hart Smith/Natalya (Hart Dynasty)....... involved in major feuds and big matches
* Cryme Tyme........... they have a Tag Title match on SummerSlam... nuff said. SD has tag teams....two so far.
* Mike Knox...... huh?

As you see there, I only covered the new stars. I omitted the Divas because well they aren't granted any kind of real face time. Gail Kim and Mickie James had a disastrous match on Aug. 17's Raw, so there might be some blowback from that, unfortunately. Also I did not mention ECW because it is a developmental TV brand. It is. My girlfriend asked, what is ECW..... I told her, today, it's nothing really.

Raw has quite the talent pool of new guys that need a push. SD's newbie pool is not so deep as many of their guys have been or were WWE or World Hvt. champs or main eventers at one point in the past 10 years.

With SummerSlam hours away, we'll know if the WWE is willing to take a chance like they used to do, or will play it safe. However, I hope they are taking the complaints of the locker room seriously. They need to boost people or those kids and chicks they pander to with the same stars will grow up and then move on.
