"You've lost that lovin' feeling,
Whoa, that lovin' feeling,
You've lost that lovin' feeling,
Now it's gone...gone...gone...wooooooh."
Now, that may seem like an odd choice of song to kick of a wrestling column but, to me at least, that's how I feel about the current state of wrestling. Growing up in Ireland, wrestling was never 'that' mainstream and at times you were called to arms to defend the product. I remember during the mid 90's I lied and told anyone who insulted the (then) WWF that it was the WCW product that was 100% fake, whereas WWF was a mere 55%. Firstly, don't ask me how I worked that one out in my mind and secondly, that's how much I loved WWF. I was never a WCW, ECW, NWA fan growing up...I flat out refused to watch it. I was loyal to one brand and one brand only, the WWF. Now, however, I'm finding it tougher and tougher to sit through any match, promo, or show without sighing either in annoyance or pure boredom.
But first, lets go back to the early 90's. This was a time when WWF could do no wrong in my eye's. A time when it truely was "still real to me damn it!". I remember being scared out of my wit's when The Undertaker appeared on the big screen after Royal Rumble '94 and being convinced he was going to come and kill me. A magical time when, all my favourite stars from the late 80's still held pulling power. Now,let us fast forward slightly to the mid 90's. A time when clown's, garbage men, dentist's and farmer's ruled the roster and were shoved down our throats. A time when Bob Holly probably wasnt an ass...yet. Even at a young age, I grimaced and continued to watch my favourite thing on TV because that's what a loyal fan does. Stick by your team, through the tough times, or in this case the ridiculous time's.
Now, the time when all the past stars of the 80's and mid 90's got pushed to one side as Vince McMahon proved why the WWF was 'thee' power player in the wrestling world. A time when WWF programming was must see TV, a time when I would be left fuming if I ever missed a single WWF show or PPV. A time when as a viewer and fan, you simply did'nt know what was around the corner. I'm talking of course about 'The Attitude Era'. For the older fan just think back to when 'Raw is War' meant exactly that, WAR! A time when you would get goosebumps at the opening theme "da na na na na na na na na,da na na na na na na na na na na na"...or something like that. Now, you could say that I'm viewing that time through rose tinted spec's, but I'd like to disagree. It was'nt a case of 'well, you were younger, less wise to the goings on of the business'. No, it truely was an amazing time. Even the small things. The Acolytes standing on top of the ramp as the opening pyro exploded around them. Gangrel covering his victimes in 'blood'. The time when GTV randomly came on and showed WWF programming in a new light.
All of which lead's us to today's modern product. Personally, I began to fall out of love with the WWF when it became no more. I'm talking of course the name change because of court case with the World Wildlife Fund. At 23 year's of age, I don't think anything has annoyed me, stuck in my side and just down right p*ssed me off as much as that. WWF became World Wrestling Entertainment, it became the WWE. It does'nt even sound right. Just think about it, Vince McMahon often said "Anything can happen here, in the World Wrestling Federation". That magical 'F', the Federation, the WWF Championship. It just suit's it. Now, I know that's a really small thing to have made me throw all my toys out of the cot but it just drives me up the wall. To me, that's when the crack's started to appear in this love affair that has lasted my entire life, the true constant in my life...and yes I'm aware that sound's pervy and I come across as a sadcase but thats how passionate I have been when it comes to the,*sigh*, WWE.
It was now becoming worse and worse as the weeks progressed. Suddenly it was 1996 all over again, suddenly the WWE had managed to reverse time only this time I'm less patient. Now, the WWE was starting to test me. The brand extension, I liked. The fact that they canned the I.C and Tag belt's did not sit well. Speaking of belts, I miss the old WWF Tag Team Championships, iconic belts with the famous red lettering 'world' smack bang in the middle. Whilst we're on the subject of belts, well, I think we all know where this is leading. John Cena, the man's name sticks in the side of every WWF, notice I said WWF, fan. I know its not his fault for the god awful U.S and WWE spinner belts but they are just so gawdy and tacky. It's as if WWE management gave a bunch of kid's glitter, glue, cardboard and crayons and, TA DA, the new WWE Championship belt. Before everyone whinges that Stone Cold was the same with his personal belt, but that's the key word...it was HIS belt, not the WWF Championship belt.
To be honest, I could go on and on about how much the WWE has stabbed me in the back. Maybe it was my fault, maybe I placed the WWE so high up that it was obviously going to come crashing down. But, I'm stubborn as hell and egotistical so of course it was'nt my fault. Truth is, the WWE got fat and I lost interest in its old luring way's. WWE is one old dog that definately has to learn new trick's
"Bring back that lovin' feeling,
Whoa, that lovin' feeling
Bring back that lovin' feeling,
'Cause it's gone...gone..."
My thought's exactly.
