Alas, 2008 came to an end, and it was certainly an interesting year for wrestling. Both CM Punk and Jeff Hardy won titles this year, coming to the surprise of many who assume these to be “midcarders for life”, WWE continues to try and fight lagging ratings, even reaching a low that they have not in a long time reached, by getting a 2.9 on RAW earlier in the year. WWE were also plagued by many many injuries along the way, and it was a horrible year for TNA as well, who continue to have troubles breaking the 1.2 rating barrier. And it was also an interesting year for ROH who lost Gabe as a head booker, but it also contained the fantastic Jacobs/Aries feud which gets my vote for Overall Wrestling Feud of the Year.

Today’s topic: Wrestling in 2008

It was certainly a year filled with plenty of ups and downs. It was also my first year as a wrestling columnist, and I am very glad I’ve managed to last this long, especially with frequent fights with AT&T over my internet. Honestly though, even with all the downs this year has had, it was certainly a better year than 2007, but that’s still not saying much seeing how bad 07 was in wrestling.

I’d have to say my moment of the year would definitely go to Armageddon when Jeff Hardy won the title, I didn’t see that happening ever, honestly. Let’s just hope it goes somewhere soon though. Cena’s surprise at the Royal Rumble was definitely something neat though, we need more surprise moments like those in wrestling definitely because absolutely no one knew about it beforehand, and it was completely unpredictable.

CM Punk winning the title was surprised, but unfortunately that title reign didn’t go anywhere, I think Punk was still a little green and am fine with them taking it off of him as much of a fan of him as I am, and a lot of people claim they are burying him and this is just plain crap. Remember Randy Orton’s first title reign? He was definitely not ready for the main event then, though he is completely ready and has been in it for a long time now. Creating a main event star takes time, not just 2 years like Punk had under his belt.

Chris Jericho holding the title for as long as he did was a surprise, and I was glad to see it, it was a well deserved title reign that he has needed for a long time now, and he made a great champion.

I also liked seeing the belt actually change hands on RAW a couple of times this year, we need more unpredictability in wrestling like that.

Also really glad to hear of the possibility of Christian coming back, I was always a big fan of him in WWE, and he wasn’t too bad during his title reign in TNA too bad that didn’t last long.

I’m definitely interested in seeing how 09 is going to turn out for WWE, I’m hoping for the best though. WWE needs to take some example from the unpredictableness they did in 08, and try to surprise these moments on us more throughout 2009. It’s definitely part of what makes wrestling so fun, especially all of the mark out moments. Afterall being so unpredictable is what partly made the last-half of the Attitude era so good.

On the other end of the spectrum, TNA has gotten a little better towards the end of the year, but still is over polluted with crap, Shame Kaz had a injury because I was actually beginning to like Suicide just because of the interesting moves he pulled off. Honestly if TNA straightened out their storylines, and would also realize that more wrestling and less promo time is better they may be on a track to actually competing with WWE, but until they realize this they will continue being stuck in a hole, even if they are closer to being out than they were earlier this year (seriously, rock N rave infection? Stone Cold Shark Boy? Super Eric? Rat on a pole match? How can anyone possibly accept any of these things to be WWE-Competing material.)

So overall wrestling hasn’t been in too bad of a position this year, but it’s still really in a slump though. Hoping for a better ‘09. Cheers, and Happy New Year.
