The Wired View by JjR
...because Wednesdays Thursdays (for this week at least) are Wired Days

This week’s late edition examines the 22nd annual Survivor Series. Has it really been going on that long? Yes. Yes, it really has.

Warning! This article DOES contain spoilers.

Let’s start with the 3 announced Five-on-five Traditional Survivor Series Elimination matches. These matches are great formats, luckily only used once a year unlike certain other formats, and are a fantastic showcase for talent who usually couldn’t pay-per-view airtime. At the latest count, there will be 37 (NOT 36, keep reading) entertainers (not superstars) fighting on Sunday night. That hasn’t happened for... well, a while. Last year’s event wasn’t this populated. We’ll start with the obligatory Divas showcase. Team Raw consisting of Jillian Hall, Candice Michelle, Kelly Kelly, Mickie James and Beth Phoenix takes on Team Smackdown consisting of Maryse, Victoria, Natalya, Maria and Michelle McCool. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see a Team Raw win here. Candice Michelle is (unexplainably) a favourite amongst creative, Kelly Kelly is consistently improving her in-ring ability and Beth Phoenix is the top Diva heel compared with the top Diva face Mickie James. All this adds up to a win for them. Team Smackdown is nothing more than 4 faceless women and McCool, who’s defended that Divas Championship so few times it’s lost the little credibility it had, given the ridiculous purple butterfly belt they’ve been given.

Now, we move onto Team Batista featuring Batista, CM Punk, Kofi Kingston, Matt Hardy and R-Truth fighting Team Orton, this year featuring Randy Orton, Shelton Benjamin, William Regal, Cody Rhodes and Mark Henry. This has just got to be a Team Batista win. Team Orton is so below-par compared to Team Batista that there’s just no comparison. Mark Henry being on Team Orton is pretty much the final nail in the coffin, the big guy will never be on the winning side. Cody Rhodes is not even Raw standard, let alone Survivor Series standard. Benjamin is due a loss to R-Truth in their rivalry. William Regal may well get the better of Punk and Kingston, but not Batista. Plus, a Batista win would tee up a great Batista-Orton feud which could fill time until Wrestlemania’s inevitable Batista-Cena match and the Orton-DiBiase-Rhodes-Manu faction storyline.

Finally, Team HBK consisting of Shawn Michaels, Rey Mysterio, Cryme Tyme and The Great Khali (who is an absolute face now, who saw that one coming?) taking on Team JBL, which consists of John Bradshaw Layfield, Kane, MVP, John Morrison and The Miz. Might there be another face victory here? Absolutely. Cryme Tyme are due a win over Miz and Morrison after Cyber Sunday. After the numerous Mysterio wins over Kane, another one won’t hurt here. Shawn Michaels will beat JBL to set up another fight between the two at Armageddon, possibly even Wrestlemania with the potential to be a great battle in the same vein of HBK-Y2J. The only doubt I have here is the MVP storyline where he has to win before Survivor Series due to “contractual money issues”. He may win due to the fact he has been on a poor, poor run and hasn’t won in months. Also, The Great Khali – the curse of the big guy. It would seem inevitable he’ll lose but only time will tell.

Next, the casket match between The Undertaker and Big Show, This, surprisingly, has turned into a nice battle between the two and a Casket match would seem like an appropriate Undertaker Survivor Series match after the numerous previous Casket and Buried Alive matches he’s had at this grand event. My head tells me an Undertaker win is on the cards, but my gut tells me The Undertaker’s going to lose this one. The Undertaker’s been clearly struggling in the ring and being written out for a couple of weeks would do him the world of good, as well as having a great excuse to give him a break due to being buried in the casket and possibly undergoing more after the match (casket set on fire, casket buried six feet under, casket beaten with steel pipes, etc). Big Show has been utilized well since his return and he’s looking in great shape again, which I wish I could say about The Undertaker also. Alas, his career is winding down, much like that of Shawn Michaels, and I can quite honestly see Wrestlemania 26 hosting a Shawn Michaels-Undertaker double retirement match that would be absolutely phenomenal.

Now, John Cena being given a title match upon his return is just ludicrous, it really is. I really hope that given this stupid decision, they don’t make it stupider by actually giving him the win. I really and truly hope Y2J delivers a good match and the right result. I’m not a Cena fan by the way. That’s all that shall be spoken of this monstrosity of a match.

Now, SPOILER ALERT! THIS PARAGRAPH CONTAINS SPOILERS (at least they’re spoilers until Smackdown airs, although if you’re reading this, you’re on the kind of website which has already given away the results of this week’s Smackdown taping from last week)!!! The triple threat match between Triple H, Vladimir Kozlov and Jeff Hardy for the WWE Championship is an exciting match. It’s exciting because, in my eyes, this is the first real chance of a title change since Triple H won the title. All the factors are there: Jeff Hardy’s new persona is a great angle (and I just love the fact he looks like a Gothic Joker), he’s finally beaten Triple H (watch Smackdown this Friday), there’s a third man involved so it won’t be just another Hardy-HHH fest. Kozlov won’t be involved in the final decision, thus preserving his unbeaten streak. I honestly think Jeff Hardy will finally be given a long overdue chance of being champion and carrying a brand. It’s worth doing, even as an experiment, merely to see what he can do as “the main guy”. Good luck to him. Oh, and if Triple H wins again, I urge you to turn off Smackdown – teach them a lesson: Stop pandering to the guy married to the boss’s daughter.
