NoDQ.com > Columns > On the Mat, w/ Matt Henry. Lesnar is King!!!
Posted by Matt Henry on 11/17/2008 at 02:43 PM

Hello friends and readers. Welcome to another edition of "On the Mat" with Matt Henry. Today I thought I would talk a bit about the meteoric rise of Brock Lesnar in the UFC. As well as some of the WWE's recent roster cuts. Let's get down to business!

First of all, let me say that I have not seen the Lesnar vs. Couture fight in its entirety, but I did see the 2nd round and Lesnar's post fight interview. From what I saw Brock Lesnar once again stepped up his game ten times over from how great he looked against Heath Herring. Randy Couture certainly put big Brock to the test, but in the end it simply was not enough to overcome the monster. Randy managed to strain Lesnar and even bust him open ever so slightly. However, the end came when Lesnar easily took down Couture and dropped a series of hammer fists onto the face and head of the MMA legend. It didn't look to me as though the shots were seriously hurting Couture, but they were strong enough to cause the ref to stop the fight and award the UFC heavyweight title to "The Next Big Thing"

In this writers humble opinion their is not a man on the UFC's roster who can hold a candle to Lesnar. Perhaps Tim Silvia could come close, but even he would fall prey and victim to the sheer size, power, and speed of the reigning UFC champ. At the rate he is going he will only improve. Lesnar has finally found his niche and has silenced any criticism I may have had against him. Lesnar will quickly become not only a legend, but a millionaire as well.

I have an enormous amount of respect and admiration for Randy Couture. I certainly hope this is not the last we see of him in a UFC ring. I don't even believe this will be the last title Couture holds. He proved Saturday night that he can hang with the young aggressive behemoth. He may not have won the fight, but he did not lose any of his luster or respect. Couture WILL be back. It may not be for Dana White's UFC promotion, but Randy will step into the cage again.

Now onto WWE's latest additions to ever growing list of released talent. With the release of former ECW star Super Crazy, the WWE now has only one ECW original on it's roster in Tommy Dreamer. Also released a few days later were Raw draftee's Chuck Palumbo, and Paul London. Anyone who didn't see these cuts coming must be blind. Palumbo was never even used on Raw since the draft took place, and London had been in the dog house for over a year now. Once his tag team gimmick with future mega star "The" Brian Kendrick ended the writing was clearly on the wall for London. London is just as gifted in the ring as Kendrick, but he lacked the charisma and the microphone skills to break through the glass ceiling.

I see Super Crazy working in Mexico for one of their top companies and making a nice little splash. In the case of Chuck Palumbo I believe he will find a home in Japan perhaps working with his former friend and partner Sean O'Haire. I don't think he would get very far anywhere here in the US. TNA is over crowded with unused talent, and ROH has too high of a work rate for Palumbo to make any kind of impact. Now, Paul London, here is a guy who could do very well to work the indies for a while and truly develop a character. He would fit very nicely into either ROH or TNA. His work rate is good enough to hang with anyone one either of those rosters. My only concern is how much room for him their would be in TNA.

The next 2 releases came as a bit of a shock to me. Smackdown's Kenny Dykstra, and ECW's Elijah Burke. Dykstra seemed like a guy the WWE would want to hang on to. With his youth and height he could have made some waves in a few years. The biggest loss in my opinion was Elijah Burke. This kid has it all! Charisma, confidence, style, wrestling talent, mic skills, and desire. Either of these 2 men have the possibility to make a mark in TNA. I think Dykstra could do very well there, but Burke should maybe wait it out a while. I think Vinnie Mac may come to his senses and bring him back sooner rather than later. Much like he did with Cryme Tyme. Burke can be a big money player in the WWE is Vince allows him to shine.

Along with those main roster releases, we have also apparently finally seen the last of Mike Adamle. In classic Adamle fashion he totally botched almost all of his last in ring promo, and was about as believable as hobo in a tuxedo! I have to admit that a little piece of me feels bad for the guy. I hope and pray that TNA doesn't try to bring him in and that WWE leaves him on the shelf for good. Adamle simply doesn't have the knowledge or the passion for the business. He had no right to be in such a high profile position when he has no love for the industry.

On a related note, I share the same opinion of the majority of the WWE Divas. There are a handful who truly deserve to be in the business. Women like; The Glamzon, Mickey James, Victoria, Natalya, and maybe one or two others that really show a desire to be there and to improve. Sadly the majority of the women employed by the WWE are simply models and strippers who look good in booty shorts! I remember a time when both male and female performers had to have a genuine passion, love and knowledge of the wrestling business. It seems as though the only job requirement today is to be pretty and in shape. With TNA's Knockout division completely leaving the Diva's in the dust, now is the time for Vince and the WWE to wake up and realize that we want to see women who can work and talk, not just make us drool. Some of the Diva's matches are down right painful to watch. They are clumsy and a danger to themselves and their opponents. You can't make a great wrestler out of someone who doesn't love wrestling and doesn't want to learn the art form.

Well folks, I suppose that's all I have for this week. I hope you enjoyed the read and that you all come back again next time. I wish all my readers and friends a safe and happy Thanksgiving as well as a wonderful holiday season. Take care of yourselves and as always... Be good to each other! Thanks for going "On the Mat", with Matt Henry.
