The following column contains SmackDown spoilers. You have been warned.
This past Monday night on RAW, the general manager and new King of the Ring ended the show prematurely mid-way through the main-event which saw Orton take on the new WWE champion Triple H.
This past Tuesday night, Mike Adamle and Tazz left the ECW announce table prior to the beginning of the main-event which saw Chavo Guerrero and Bam Neely take on the ECW champion Kane and the match was un-commentated.
This Friday night on SmackDown, Vickie Guerrero strips The Undertaker of the World Heavyweight Championship and bans him from using the gogoplata right before the main-event.
What a god-damn mess.
In the space of one-week, the WWE have managed to devalue all three of their top titles, diverted the attention away from the titles themselves and generally make it appear as if the company is in more disarray than it already is. The thing is that these storylines (although I’ll get to weather or not Mike Adamle walking out was planned or not later) in themselves are by no means bad, it’s just that having all three in one week is a downright waste of time. There’s a difference between being controversial and being out of control.
Take the RAW situation. What better way to gain heel heat for the new King of the Ring than to have him ruin the whole show for everyone? Alright, so people might be annoyed that they didn’t see the whole match, but let’s face it, this will hardly be the last time these two face off.
Then ECW. It’s no secret Adamle is unpopular with the fans. Having it look as if he can’t take it anymore is a great way to either gain sympathy for him, grow hatred for him or just plain write him off the show. I do have a theory that Adamle possibly did walk off of his own accord and the producers had the quick wit to tell Tazz to follow him so it looked storylined, but that’s neither here nor there.
And SmackDown. Oh, what a great heel GM Vickie Guerrero is. Championship stripping is not a new concept, but when the GM is dating the number one contender and she then goes on to outlaw the former champ’s most devastating manoeuvre, it’s just that little bit more special.
If only they hadn’t tried to go for the hat-trick and done these one at a time. All three main events this week will be marred in controversy. ALL OF THEM! It makes me feel bad for criticising the lack of clean finishes in TNA. What’s more infuriating is that since all three have happened so close together, it means there’s only a few directions they can go with them. Take the SmackDown situation. Vickie will probably announce a tournament to determine the new World Champion, it’ll be biased towards Edge, Undertaker will be banned, Vickie will be removed from power and replaced by Teddy who’ll have Taker face Edge at Judgement Day in some gimmick match or other. We already know Triple H and Orton are going to be in a Cage Match and to be honest nobody cares what they do with the ECW belt. It’ll actually be relatively unaffected actually, besides the fact all the attention will be diverted away from it for the next few weeks.
This week has not been inspiring. It has not made my heart skip a beat wondering what will happen next. It hasn’t even caused me any anger over Taker being stripped of the title so soon into his reign. If anything, it’s made me reconsider my allegiance to the WWE. I may be proven wrong in the coming weeks, but that’s a scary thought when neither TNA nor ROH interest me that much either.
What a god-damn mess.
