NoDQ.com > Columns > Corey's Column: Cruiserweights, Tag Teams and Diva
Posted by Corey D. Adney on 04/17/2008 at 06:07 PM

Sorry it’s been a while since I have written anything, my home computer has been on the fritz, so I’m typing tonight from my place of corporate enslavement.
The Way the WWE has set up the rosters is not conducive with how it runs the shows. What do I mean by that? I mean that the WWE needs to do something about this problem revolving around cruiserweights, tag teams and divas. First of all, WWE removed the Cruiserweight Championship from SmackDown! several months back during the storyline involving Hornswoggle as Mr. McMahon’s bastard son. Hornswoggle was the champion at the time and SmackDown! GM Vikie Guerrero basically stripped him of the belt and after that, the title went by the wayside and eventually was removed as an active championship.
One thing that the United States has never done well in the world of professional wrestling is showcasing cruiserweights. CRUISERWEIGHTS ARE PEOPLE TOO!!! Crowds would get behind cruiserweight matches if promotions knew how to showcase them, but sadly, no. Promotions in this country focus primarily on the big men who walk in, kick ass, and leave. No one shows the little guys who can fly through the air and pull off fast paced, intricate moves….no no no; all we ever see is the big burly man-giants who throw punches and use power moves.
This lack of a WWE Cruiserweight Championship has left many promising superstars with know gold to chase. Men like Jamie Noble, Funaki and Hornswoggle now find themselves the jobber of squash matches rather than competing for the gold. A few cruiserweights have made a big enough name for themselves that they can go on to compete as a successful singles wrestler with the bigger athletes, for example, Chavo Guerrero and Rey Mysterio. And the rest of the cruiserweights find themselves being paired up and turned into random tag teams that never get pushed, like Shannon Moore and Jimmy Wang Yang.
This leads me up to another problem in the WWE…a lack of strong tag teams. Both SmackDown! and RAW have Tag Team Championships, both neither brand truly has any stand out tag teams. On Raw you have the Highlanders, Cade and Murdoch, Carlito and Santino, Holly and Rhodes, and the Hooligans…and the returning Cryme Tyme. Over on SmackDown! and ECW you get Deuce and Dominoe, Miz and Morrison, Moore and Yang…and once in a blue moon we get the opportunity to see the Brothers of Destruction. Why have two sets of tag belts with so few tag teams…even fewer of which are ever pushed into title contention?
Now, as for the Divas, my only complaint is that the WWE is not using them as they should. The women who work their butts off to get into the business and make it to the WWE don’t want to be there as pure eye candy for the male audience. Those chicks wanna fight! I hate to say it, but look at TNA, they know how to use the Divas, the WWE could learn a lesson from them.
Here’s my idea on how the WWE can correct these problems. Simply move all the tag teams to one brand and all the Divas to the other brand. Put all the tag teams on SmackDown! where the divas can’t do much anyway because of the heavy child viewer ship and the fact that it airs on public television. All the Divas can go to RAW and start competing for the Women’s title like they all wish they were doing now.
