NoDQ.com > Columns > Hillmania: The Articles of Orton, Part 2
Posted by Kevin Hillman on 04/05/2008 at 12:11 AM

Today I will bring you the second part of my series; The Articles of Orton, and I hope you enjoy, or utterly hate this one. Either way, I want responses!

So today's topic is how Randy Orton has improved himself over the last year.

Improving himself:
For a long time, Randy has been recognized for his natural talent and bad attitude. Stories of destroying hotel rooms and stealing fans' cameras as well as the use of drugs has given Randy a terrible reputation. Some fans speculated that Orton was given a free ride and exemption from rules because of his family and talent which led to his main event status.

With several suspensions and failed drug tests under his belt, Randy finally realized that he needed to change his life. Perhaps it was working with a naturally good human being like John Cena that changed him. There were reports of John Cena and Randy Orton becoming friends during their program together. It would make a lot of sense, as their matches together were all very good. Their match at Summerslam was a symbol of Randy Orton's growth. Randy proved himself to be a good wrestler and a legitimate competitor and showed that he can truly get a crowd into his matches when he steps up his game.

Randy's size has seemingly decreased as well, which leads many to believe that maybe Orton has just recently given up the juice. None of us can truly judge that, but it seems plausible.

Perhaps the motivation for Randy Orton was the fact that WWE was finally giving him the chance to run with the ball. During his first World title reign, Orton was given the shaft and brushed to the side after a mere 28 days, thanks to Triple H. Randy needed to make the most of this recent opportunity, and after his second reign ended in 15 minutes, also thanks to Triple H, the Legend Killer needed to make sure that his third reign wouldn't end as a dud as well. Maybe the motivation was also the fact that whenever Wrestlemania rolls around, Randy is told he will be headlining the event, just to be given the shaft in the final months. For years, the rumored main event of Wrestlemania has been Randy Orton vs Kurt Angle or Randy Orton vs Triple H. The inclusions of John Cena and Rey Mysterio turned two of those main events into Triple Threats, and the popularity of Batista prevented his match with Triple H from happening at Wrestlemania 21. Were these changes Randy Orton's fault? I doubt we will ever know.

Whatever the motivation was, Randy Orton has improved his standing in the company, his physical health, and his in-ring game, despite the outcries that he is 'a terrible wrestler'. Anyone who has found the ability to work that hard to improve himself deserves the opportunities that Randy has been given.

My proverbial hat is off to Randy Orton for being able to realize his faults and working on them. I hope that Randy continues on this path of betterment and finds himself with a nice and long title reign that will quiet all the nay-sayers in the wrestling fan community.

Thank you for reading and please let me know what you think.
