NoDQ.com > Columns > Hillmania: The Articles of Orton, Part 1
Posted by Kevin Hillman on 04/03/2008 at 12:23 PM

In the next few days, I will be writing numerous articles about Randy Orton, why?

Because Randy Orton was the best choice to win at Wrestlemania.

"Blasphemy! Randy Orton is boring and cheats to win! He's not nearly as talented as Triple H and he can't get the crowd to react like John Cena! Plus it was Wrestlemania! The good guy is always supposed to win."

Well, honestly, none of that is really true, and if you believed any of that, then you are doing exactly what Randy Orton wants. I hope you enjoy signing his paychecks.

So I hope you enjoy this and the following articles on Randy Orton and why I think he deserves the title reign he is finally getting.

Tonight's topic: Randy Orton is a True Heel

Randy Orton is such a fantastic heel that no one can really tell where the character ends and the real man begins. Reports everywhere claim that Randy Orton is something of a prick in real life, and most fans can't stand to interact with the man. Was he perhaps, going the old school route and staying in character the entire time? It's possible, but doubted. Either way, Randy Orton has found a way to get under your skin to the point where you would want to pull a knife on him if you were to see him in public.

But what is it about Randal Keith Orton that makes people hate him so much? Is it because of his lean but incredibly built body? A lot of guys hate Cena for that reason. Is it because he looks like a creepy pedophile? That's very possible. I know I would never want my kids to go near him. Perhaps it's the way he just looks and acts like a slithering snake, especially when he sets up for the RKO. Maybe it's the dark and demented look he gets in his eye when he's about to finish his prey off. Being a disrespectful 'Legend Killer' sure didn't hurt his heat at all. Ending careers with the top of his boot made him look even more like an ass. The slow methodical wrestling style as well as the seemingly boring and mundane promos just added to his heel persona as more and more fans who claim to be 'smart marks' found themselves angry at Randy Orton for his styles, citing that he 'just isn't exciting.' A heel that can get internet fans to hate him in today's world is a truly impressive heel. But what truly makes people hate the Legend Killer, is the fact that he can win, no matter what.

Following a formula made famous by the Nature Boy, Ric Flair, Randy Orton has been constantly thrust into matches against loved and heralded babyfaces, who were the heroes of many fans. Every month, the fans were sure that their new hero would come and vanquish the evil that is Randy Orton, yet every month, they left disappointed. What made it worse, was sometimes, Randy was just so good, that he would actually win cleanly. And nothing gets the fans' blood boiling like a bad guy who is capable of defeating their heroes without even having to cheat. Back in the days of Evolution, Randy Orton would go back and forth between cheating, and winning on his own merit. When he faced Shawn Michaels, Randy needed to cheat. But when he faced greats such as Mick Foley and Chris Benoit, Randy was able to pull out the victory without any help from his stablemates. Today, Orton employs the same tactics, often shocking people when he is able to win without the help of a low blow.

Some nights, Randy realizes he is unable to win, and uses his cerebral assassin-like tendencies to cleverly weasel his way out of losing his belt. When facing HBK, Randy ended the match with a calculated low blow to end the match. Randy Orton may have lost his championship to Y2J had it not been for interference from JBL. When Randy Orton put his belt on the line against John Cena at No Way Out, Orton cleverly got himself disqualified after not being able to win via countout, by slapping the referee. This quick and clever move saved Randy Orton's title and got him into a main event of Wrestlemania.

Other nights however, Randy proves himself to actually be a fully capable competitor. In his second bout with HBK last year, the 3rd generation wrestler was able to defeat Shawn Michaels despite being locked in vicious holds such as the sharpshooter, the crossface, and the ankle lock. A quick hesitation from Michaels, and Orton instinctively hit the RKO and won. Jeff Hardy fell in similar fashion, as all Orton had to do was wait for the Twist of Fate attempt and reverse it into another devastating RKO. Hardy fans threw a fit. Finally it came time for the undefeatable heroes, John Cena and Triple H, to face Randy Orton and take his title.

There was no doubt in anyone's mind that Randy's reign would come to an end. Triple H is an 11 time champion, just waiting for his next reign, and John Cena is the superman of professional wrestling; a man of steel who can never be defeated. The only guarantee at Wrestlemania was that Randy Orton wouldn't leave as champion.

Much to the surprise of everyone, Randy pulled off the clean victory at the grandest stage of them all. How could Randy Orton, a man who had to cheat and luck his way into his current title reign, defeat the top two challengers in the WWE? Even Cena haters ended up infuriated by the result of this match, and that is exactly what Randy and the WWE wanted.

Now, Randy Orton is on a new level of villainy. Fans all around the world will pay their hard-earned dollars just to see their new hero defeat Randy Orton, whether it be Triple H or Cena again, or a newcomer like CM Punk. Fans hate Randy Orton, marks and smarks alike, and THAT, is what makes a true heel.

Thank you for reading and please let me know how you feel on this touchy matter.

By the way, when Randy fought Hogan, did anyone else here cheer violently for Orton? I did.
